The CHAMPS summer program is now underway at Camp Fellowship near Lake Greenwood in Waterloo, SC.  The program began on July 8^th and will run through August 2^nd.

“CHAMPS has gotten off to a fantastic and fun start,” said Jessica Shamoon ’13, Head Girls’ Mentor. “The students have been very enthusiastic and a joy to be with. We are all looking forward to the rest of our time here at Camp Fellowship.”

CHAMPS continues its summer academic portion of the program. In the mornings, students receive valuable classroom instruction in the humanities, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), and Chinese language lessons.

Students also participate in camp activities such as swimming, rock climbing, and creating and tending an organic garden.

Kevin Cartee, Camp Fellowship Director, says the CHAMPS students will benefit from spending the summer at the 140-acre site. Cartee, a Laurens native who graduated from PC in 1998, has been involved with CHAMPS since he was a sophomore.

“I’ve always enjoyed having the opportunity to give back and be a part of the community that raised me,” he said.

In addition to participating in an academic portion and a camp activities portion of the summer program, CHAMPS students have a new addition to the program that they are involved in this year: Boys’ Council and Girls’ Circle. During these sessions, students focus on the character-building aspect of CHAMPS, all while honing their social skills.

And this summer CHAMPS continues its tradition of inviting members of the community to speak with students each day. This year, speakers include CHAMPS alumni, staff from Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy, Miss USA runner-up Ali Rogers, and more.

CHAMPS is a collaborative program comprised of members from PC and the business, church, and education sectors of Laurens County.
