About Presbyterian College

“I have a plan to get a college education and feel this will allow me to help the rest of my family. Somehow by accomplishing this, it will provide a reason for all the things that have happened in my life. I plan to work very hard and God is on my side helping me every step of the way.”

Steven Gatkuoth

Steven says he appreciates the opportunity he’s been given at PC. He says he’s “still excited” about being here. All the same, he often thinks about the events in his life that led him to walk from his homeland.

China: Cameron Cook

"Many people view my Asia experience and currently New York City as incredible opportunities, and they are. I am loving every minute of my new life here,” Cook said. “But without the support of my friends and family and having the solid background from Presbyterian College, I wouldn’t be here in this particular place in my life right now. I still look back on my four years at PC as the best times of my life. It is an experience that nothing can compare to.”

Kazahkstan: Adam McCollum

“I ministered through relationships,” he said. “If you build trust with someone, it doesn’t matter if something is illegal. They want to talk to you about it. If you’re willing to be friends with somebody and deal with their problems and help them when they’re hurt and ask them to help you when you’re hurt, then they’re willing to talk about what matters. They’re willing to talk about their family, and their religion, and their culture.”

Ghizhou: Dr. John Griffith

...'Your mascot is the Blue Hose.’ Well the look on people’s faces and his face – what’s a Blue Hose? So we went through the explanation of what a blue stocking was and how at some point that name was changed to Blue Hose. So, I asked if he would lead a cheer for his alma mater. We had that room of Chinese educators and representatives from Presbyterian College in a banquet hall at the Communist Party headquarters shouting, ‘Go Blue Hose!’

Istanbul: Lauren Joyce

After almost a year of anticipation had passed, the day of my trip to Istanbul finally arrived. The night before my class left for Spring Break 2008 in Istanbul, Turkey, I stayed up until 3 am filling my suitcase to the brim, completing a take-home exam for Middle East and studying for a Finite quiz. Although I was exhausted from my late night, I could barely contain my excitement as I waited anxiously in my apartment at PC for my parents to drive me to the airport.

Generosity of young alumni

These are the moments that make a student think he simply wouldn’t be the same person if he had not gone to PC. Giving back, then, for many young alumni, is seen not as something they might do, but something they will gladly do. As gladly as they threw the Frisbee in the plaza.

Changes at PC

Some things here never change: Neville Hall still smells of old books; the oaks along the East and West Plazas stand impervious to time, wind, and Frisbees; PCuns still run to Whiteford’s at all hours for chicken strips and sweet tea; the midnight oil burns until dawn during finals week; and what Mama says, goes.

Archives and Special Collections

Presbyterian College’s archives and special collections pose an interesting dichotomy. Obviously, it is a place devoted to preserving history, which means there are items there that are old. On the other hand, the valued materials are housed in a new, state-of-the-art facility – and that has “future” written all over it.
