Library directed by PC alum receives nation's highest medal

January 11, 2008

The Georgetown County Library, directed by Dwight McInvaill '76, is one of five libraries in the nation to receive the 2007 National Medal for Library Service. It is the nation's highest honor for libraries. The Institute of Museum and Library Services annually awards the libraries in recognition of their civic, educational, economic, environmental, and social contributions.

McInvaill received the medal from First Lady Laura Bush at a ceremony at the White House on Monday, January 14.

"The award-winning museums and libraries, through their innovative programs and services, engage citizens of all ages," Mrs. Bush said. "They teach us about ourselves and the world around us, and in doing so, enrich our communities and the nation."

McInvaill, who said that retired PC English professor Jim Skinner "was the best teacher (he) ever had," has been director of the Georgetown County Library for the past 12 years. The library is the first one in South Carolina to receive the medal.
