Election and the Media
Topic of the Russell Program
The Russell Committee focuses on the role that the media plays in contemporary society. With the ongoing presidential election, this year's program will explore how the media influences contemporary elections. From "traditional" sources like television and the print, to "new" sources like blogs and youtube, the media plays a vital role in what the public comes to believe about the candidates. It provides a vital role in the functioningof our democratic society.
To that end, this year's program will contain a variety of lectures and performances that explore this relationship between elections and the media. From political satire from The Capitol Steps, to high profile commentators like the Washington Post's David Broder, to new media visionaries like Mr. Peter Leyden, the program prompts the opportunity for a community discussion about the role of the media in this most important area of our society.
