Gary Hipp plays the Great Highland Bagpipes with the "Palmetto Pipes and Drums" of Columbia, South Carolina. In addition to being one of the charter members, he runs the band's piping school program, serves on the board, and teaches the instrument at Presbyterian College.

His training includes 10 years of classes at the North American Academy of Piping with internationally acclaimed pipers Sandy Jones, Colin McClellan, Ed Neigh, Greg Abbott, Bill Caudill, and others.

He is a retired SCETV television producer and director. He often pipes solo for weddings, funerals, church services, and other event. Mr. Hipp is also a member of Clan Cameron, and he wears the tartan for solo piping events.
