The Skills it Takes to Lead

Amy Jessee is the concert master of PC’s chamber orchestra – and she is only a sophomore. That’s right. Amy is the primo violinist in the orchestra. The lead violin chair. The one the entire chamber orchestra watches to make sure their bows are going in the right direction. And she’s in the class of 2010.

Amy’s experience is an example of the opportunities open to talented students to find music outlets at PC.  Not only is PC’s string program growing by leaps and bounds, but new students are finding a wide spectrum of options from bagpipe to choir to string quartet – and everything in between!

Degree Tracks and Courses

Courses that students take and count toward graduation while at PC may be influenced by Advanced Placement hours earned prior to matriculation, college courses transferred to PC from another institution, performance on diagnostic tests taken at PC before beginning classes, the availability of courses, study abroad schedules, and many other factors.

Students are monitored by advisers and have regular meetings with to assure that progress toward graduation is being made. At the end of the junior year, students schedule an appointment with the Registrar who administers a "Senior Audit" to assure that the student is making progress towards graduation and that plans are in place to complete requirements while time remains.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music is the most basic degree in the Department of Music. This degree requires experiences in theory, music history, musicianship studies, keyboard proficiency, and personal and corporate performance. The degree may be combined with programs in other academic disciplines to form a double-major. Some music majors choose to earn one or more minors with their BA in Music. Many music majors "fill out" their studies in music by earning additional hours in different areas of music to "tweak" their program in an area of personal interest.

The "areas of emphasis" available to PC students in music include an Emphasis in Music Performance and an Emphasis in Sacred Music. Beyond the requirements of the BA in Music, these two programs require additional earned hours in key music areas such as history and theory studies as well as experiences in the specific areas of performance and sacred music.

The BS in Music Education combines a music degree with a minor in Professional Education. Students successfully completing this program earn a K-12 teaching certificate from the state of South Carolina. Though rigorous, this degree may be completed during a four-year PC career. Students in the music education track should begin working with an adviser early in their college career. While the first two years of the music education track are very similar to that of other music degree programs, there are a few crucial differences, mostly related to the scheduling of courses that may only be offered in alternate years. An adviser with music education credentials can be very helpful in planning and executing a course plan.
