Discovering the Spirit

While most PC graduates do not enter professional church work, students are challenged to lead Christian lives that may include lay leadership as members of local churches. The religion department faculty members urge students to pursue both academic excellence and spiritual development.

The department of Religion and Philosophy offers three different tracks for students considering a major in this area:

• Religion
• Religion-Christian Education
• Philosophy

In the religion major, the religion-Christian education major, and the religion-philosophy major, the emphasis is on a broad range of courses.

Students spread their work among courses in:

• Biblical studies
• Theology
• World religions
• Philosophy
• Christian education
• Church history

Because Presbyterian seminaries make Greek and Hebrew a prerequisite for their curricula, many pre-ministerial candidates study these biblical languages at PC. Students who major in religion-philosophy take an equal number of religion and philosophy courses beyond the general education requirements of the college.

An emphasis on ethics and values-based education can be found throughout the curriculum, including courses in medical ethics and in applied professional ethics. Presbyterian College also supports a theologian-in-residence program, which allows a professor from another institution to teach on the campus for a semester.
