Theatre and Dance Department

The theatre major at Presbyterian College prepares students for graduate school and entry level work in the theatre through its focus on the individual student's talents and interests. Students may tailor their theatre experience to emphasize theatre history, acting, directing, design, communications, dance, or arts administration, choosing courses from the department's offerings, and creating advanced courses in their particular area of interest. One of the benefits of choosing a small theatre program like the one at PC, is the ability to modify the program to fit the individual student's needs. You will be more than a face to your professors. Careful one-on-one counseling between you and your advisor, will form the backbone of an individual program of study designed to develop your specific talents to the fullest.

A theatre major within the structure provided by a liberal arts education provides more than just skills training. Your artistic insights will be developed as much in your general education courses as in your major course of study. Theatre is an art form that seeks to comment on the society that frames it -- knowledge of that society will give your theatre work depth.

You may be planning to attend graduate school or pursue art, theatre or dance as a career. Or you may decide to embark on a teaching career. Whatever your career plans, you'll be prepared. Recent theatre graduates have continued their education in graduate schools like the North Carolina School for the Arts and the University of Georgia, found work in broadcasting, worked as interns in theatres in New York and Atlanta, become professional dancers, found positions as arts administrators, and been hired as theatre teachers in secondary schools. Each of these students was able to develop his or her individual interests within a department that values the diverse talents of its members.

These talents are developed through experience, and students are encouraged to lend a hand in productions, whether it is on or off stage. The plays at Presbyterian College are chosen to compliment the academic curriculum and to develop the skills of the students involved. We regularly participate in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, where we have received positive feedback, and individual student work has been honored.
A top education requires top facilities, and the Harper Center for the Arts, a $1.35 million theatre building and art gallery, certainly meets that requirement. This building houses most of the theatre and dance classes and provides Presbyterian College students with exposure to cutting edge professional art.

The faculty in theatre and dance at Presbyterian College is committed to producing artists of the future, artists who know what they believe and create work that communicates the depth of that insight to their audience.
