Rhodes Scholarship
The Rhodes Scholarship program was established by Cecil Rhodes in 1903. He dreamed of improving the world through the diffusion of leaders motivated to serve their contemporaries, trained in a contemplative life of the mind, and broadened by their acquaintences with one another and by their exposure to cultures different from their own. The scholarships encourage the promotion of international understanding and peace through studies at the University of Oxford.
Rhodes Scholars are elected for two years of study at Oxford with the possibility of renewal for a third year. All educational costs, such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory and certain other fees, are paid on the scholars' behalf by the Rhodes Trustees.
The criteria for the scholarships as indicated by Mr. Rhodes will include literary and scholastic attainments; energy to use one's talents to the full as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports, truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and the protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship; and moral force of character and instincts to lead as well as to take an interest in one's fellow beings.
