Internship Location - Good Shepherd Medical Clinic

What she did: Entered medical data into computer database, dispensed medicine to customers, filed medical records, recorded incoming medicine, answered phones, faxed prescriptions,
worked closely with doctors, volunteers, and paid clinic staff

What she learned: I learned how to do much of the office and computer work at the clinic. I
also discovered a self-interest for data and records. I had a very good experience with all of the people I worked with and improved on communication skills in the workplace. Very enjoyable experience!

History

It has been said that "to prepare for the future, we must understand the past."

The history major at PC, therefore, is designed for those seeking the enrichment found in the discipline of history and the preparation needed for the pursuit of a broad range of career and educational goals. History develops and hones various skills essential to a full life, such as trained, rational thought, clear expression, and cultural respect and appreciation. Students pursuing history as their course of study will find many opportunities for advanced study leading to careers in fields such as history, law, education, government, journalism, business, and ministry.

Versatility and variety are key words in the history department. Presbyterian College history majors have the opportunity to explore a variety of different cultures in their historical context — studying such geographical regions as Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America as well as Europe and North America. Students are encouraged to take a wide variety of courses to become familiar with the history of both Western and non-Western civilizations. History majors are required to take one seminar course during their junior or senior year, where the focus is placed upon in-depth research, writing a well-crafted paper, and a public presentation utilizing computer technology. Other courses include field trips that take students to regional historic sites, such as Revolutionary War battlegrounds, the South Carolina Archives and Department of History, and nearby plantation homes. Recent Maymester programs have taken students to France, Italy, and Vietnam. Maymester trips to different destinations are already being planned as well as summer trips to Oxford University. Also, through PC’s cooperative programs for study abroad, students can spend a semester in another country for a first-hand look at different cultures — all while completing requirements for their major.

The history department faculty realizes that academic excellence should not go unrewarded. The department offers membership in Phi Alpha Theta, a national honor society that recognizes excellence in the study of history. PC’s chapter holds annual banquets, sponsors guest speakers, and encourages students to present original research papers at statewide conferences. Recently, a PC student was awarded top honors for presenting her paper about the Moravian community in North Carolina.

Furthermore, the faculty encourages students to pursue honors research projects in a variety of historical fields. Honors research offers the opportunity for qualified students to work closely with a member of the history faculty for a full semester of independent research. After completing this work, honors students present their papers to a group of faculty and students, sharpening their public speaking skills. Honors research is an excellent preparation for graduate school and professional careers.

History students and their professors interact in a number of settings at Presbyterian College. Whether it be in the classroom, at the annual senior picnic, or an informal chat over coffee, students find the history faculty accessible, approachable, and interested in their academic progress.
