Internship Location: Tegucigalpa, Honduras with a team of doctors from private practices in South Carolina and the Greenwood Genetics Center

Internship Description: I had the opportunity to go to Honduras for a week with a group of doctors
on a medical mission's trip. I got to help check the patients in as they arrived to the clinics,
and I served as the "ophthalmologist" during the week. I decided the needed strength
and gave the patients reading glasses if the doctors decided they needed them. I also had the opportunity to talk with the patients and to play with the children.

Expectations: I was very nervous before leaving for Honduras because I did not really know anyone very well that I was going with. I did not know what to expect, or what I would be doing when I got there.

I knew that I would not be able to speak with my family for a week, which made me anxious.

What she learned: On the surface, I gained confidence in my Spanish conversation skills. I was
able to speak with the patients. They were so patient. I also got to watch the doctors interact with the people in the clinic. I realized how interesting pediatrics is to me and have decided that I want to go to medical school. On top of teaching me these things, the trip really taught me how to trust in God. Throughout the week, I got to witness so many people being saved.

The doctors helped the patients with their physical needs and then would help them spiritually. I saw a marvelous love for God in the people of Honduras, and because
of this internship opportunity, I will be changed forever!

Modern Foreign Language

French, German, Spanish, and others

Experts in all fields agree that the world is becoming smaller — a global village. What will be your role in it?
Your future plans may be as simple as a trip to a foreign country. Or your long-range goals may include international business, attending graduate school or working as a teacher.

As technology has brought the world closer together, international communication has become an increasingly vital necessity. To help students meet this need, three semesters of foreign language are a part of the general education requirement at PC. Many non-majors choose to continue their studies of modern foreign languages and choose electives from the department’s diverse curriculum.

Other students, however, elect to major in a foreign language. The department offers majors in French, German and Spanish and is one of the few colleges in South Carolina which offers courses in Portuguese.

Majors have a variety of career options in which language skills have proven invaluable. Recent graduates have enjoyed success in fields such as international banking, law, business, and journalism. Other graduates have gone on to teach at the high school and college levels.

Some foreign language majors have elected to continue their studies and have received prestigious fellowships for post-graduate study. One graduate received a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford in England, while others have earned fellowships for master’s and doctoral work at universities such as Vanderbilt University, University of Virginia, New York University, and Purdue University.

The study abroad program at PC provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a student to become immersed in another culture. Exchange programs exist between PC and universities in Japan, China, India, Korea, Finland, Germany, Australia, England, and Scotland, among others. PC is also a cooperating institution with Central College in Iowa which maintains semester and junior year programs in France, Spain, Germany/Austria, and Mexico. A similar arrangement with the Institute for American Universities allows students to enroll in French language programs in Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, or Toulon for a summer, semester, or year.

Students are not even limited to those programs, however. With careful guidance from department faculty and college administrators, students can develop their own travel and study programs.

Interested in testing your foreign language skills without leaving the United States? PC offers students the opportunity to learn from four Amity Scholars — fellowship students from foreign countries who spend the year living on campus and assisting students with their conversational skills.

Adding to that on-campus experience is the Carol International House, PC’s first residence hall designed with the living-learning concept in mind. It includes two spacious lounge areas with a fireplace, a full kitchen and dining area, a reading area, and a classroom with extensive instructional and informational technology.

Among the facility’s 33 residents are the aforementioned Amity Students and PC students who have studied abroad and wish to keep that international exposure alive. The mix of cultures and experiences, coupled with ambitious programming, makes the Carol International House the center of international experience on campus.
