Internship Description: I am currently interning in the human resources department, but will also be working with other employees inside the company. Every single day I will be doing something different!

Expectations: I did not know what to expect going into this Internship. This has been my third Internship and my favorite. Avery-Dennison is a very professional and well-run organization. I was very glad that I was able to jump right into work and start getting involved in their company on my first day. Everyone there has given me a warm welcome and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for me for the rest of the semester.

What she did: Every single day at Avery-Dennison has been completely different for me. Within my first three weeks I’ve already managed and organized employee records, updated attendance records for 2007, created new excel spread sheets, and helped resolve employee issues. I have also recently been assigned to be in charge of creating the weekly memos that go out to all of their employees. Additionally, I know that I will be doing many different projects throughout the semester.

What she learned: I have learned that in human resources every single day is different. You cannot have a set schedule because something is always coming up. You have to be patient and willing to change around your schedule to help other people out within the company.

"The friendships that I have made while I have been at PC are the friendships that I will have for the rest of my life."

"I would have to say that one way PC has influenced me the most is the people that I am surrounded by every day. My professors know me on a personal level and want to help me not only with school but also with whatever I am dealing with in my personal life. The friendships that I have made while I have been at PC are the friendships that I will have for the rest of my life. These friends are a part of my family now and I am so glad that being at PC helped to bring them into my life."

Psychology

How can a degree in psychology fit into your career plans? The answer may surprise you. Among fields requiring a college degree, psychology is expected to be the third fastest-growing field in America, and continued growth is expected for at least another dozen years. Why? Because psychology majors are trained to be “scientific problem solvers.” The abilities to think critically, to conduct research, to analyze data, and to apply those skills to the study of behavior are just the tools required for many of the careers of the 21st century.

You may be planning on entering a career in advertising, education, business, law, or human relations. Or you may opt to attend graduate school in psychology to become a clinical, child, school, industrial, social, or experimental psychologist. Post graduate programs in related fields such as physical therapy, speech pathology, pastoral counseling, and student services are options.

The PC psychology department offers a varied curriculum. Majors are required to take core courses which provide the skills for understanding, evaluating, and conducting research. Interesting and challenging electives are plentiful to help students develop an understanding of a variety of human behaviors, sometimes through service learning opportunities.
This program provides a strong foundation for post-graduate study as well as practical preparation for careers.

Those careers include a variety of fields. Psychology majors have found careers in nursing home management, counseling, hospital administration, banking, finance, public relations, coaching, insurance, real estate, and state and local government.

Qualified seniors may gain practical experience and insight through an internship program designed to place students in their areas of career interest. Students normally earn three semester hours of credit by spending nine hours a week in an off-campus activity. Recent interns have worked with disabled individuals at nearby Whitten Center, with elderly residents of Presbyterian Home, with Hospice patients, with young residents of Thornwell Home, and with schizophrenic patients in the community day program. Experiences are quite varied, ranging from human resources management or advertising in large companies to speech pathology in the public schools. Programs are also available through the Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the Health Department, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Mental Health, and numerous other community agencies.

A top education requires top facilities. The psychology department is located in Harrington-Peachtree Presbyterian Academic Center with just such advantages. The labs on the first floor were specially designed for studies in perception, physiological psychology, learning, and cognition, and there are comfortable facilities for counseling education and child studies, with two-way mirrors for observation and video taping. Students make use of the computer lab on the second floor for statistical analyses of data and graphing and for access to databases on the web. Faculty can bring all of those resources and more into the classroom through the campus network via digital projection equipment.
