Colonels Corey and Larry Cannon '78 are both serving overseas in the Global War on Terror. Corey, an infantry officers who resides in Clinton, S.C., was assigned to the Army National Guard's 218th Brigade Combat Team our of South Carolina. He is serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan, as the commander of the Regional Corps Advisory Command assigned to mentor, train, and advise the Afghan National Army. Larry, an Army reservist who resides in Kathleen, Ga., is the chief of force management at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. Both were psychology majors at PC and were commissioned as Army officers after graduating from their alma mater.

Class Notes

Class of 1957

Wayne Shoemaker ’57 moved to Ocean Isle Beach, NC after retiring from the food brokerage business in 1998. He said he became tired of retirement and started in the Real Estate business, which he is still involved with. Wayne returns to PC for all the football games and encourages all of his classmates to attend the games and support the Scotsman Club. He says it is a great way to keep in touch with friends!

Class of 1958

Jack Taylor '58 retired in 2003 from full-time as Pastor of Westminster Prebyterian Church, Lakeland, FL. He is now the part-time Stated Supply Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Fort Meade, FL. His wife, Gena, retired from teaching and is now enjoying 2 days a week as tutor at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist School, an African American Private School in Lakeland.

Class of 1966

Rusty Nelson ‘66 and his sister Ina Nelson Jones ‘79 were recently in Salt Lake City for a family wedding. They couldn't resist having their picture taken near Park City with the initials on the Mountain. A reminder of PC in a distant land!

 

Class of 1967

Virginia (Ginger) Crichfield Hall ‘67 retired in December from the Polk County School System in Florida. She and her husband Bill enjoy traveling, especially to Raleigh, NC where they visit their children, Laura Rountree Winter ‘92, Bill Winter ‘89, Charlie Hall, and their grandchildren, Reed, Rudy, and Louise Winter.

Class of 1969

Michael Grant LeFever '69 has been named President and CEO of South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, Inc. (SCICU) effective January 2, 2008. SCICU seeks to advance independent higher education through fund raising, scholarships, research, and collaborative activities among the member schools. More than 32,000 students attend SCICU member schools. The colleges are Allen University, Anderson University, Benedict College, Charleston Southern University, Claflin University, Coker College, Columbia College, Columbia International University, Converse College, Erskine College, Furman University, Limestone College, Morris College, Newberry College, North Greenville University, Presbyterian College, Southern Wesleyan University, Spartanburg Methodist College, Voorhees College, and Wofford College.

Mike has been a governmental relations consultant and registered lobbyist since 1994 with MG&C Consulting Services, a governmental affairs and business development subsidiary of McAngus, Goudelock & Courie in Columbia. During his long career in South Carolina state government, Mike was the director of four state agencies. From 1999 to 2003, he was the Deputy Chief of Staff for Executive Programs and Cabinet Affairs in the Office of Governor Jim Hodges

Class of 1971

Edna Martin Ellison '71 will be celebrated her latest book, Stronger Still, a Christian Bible study for women (and men, who have enjoyed studying it already), with a book signing on December 16, 2007, at Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg. The signing featured seven other books by Dr. Ellison which are currently in print. Ellison's books are available at all Christian bookstores, especially Lifeway Stores, Spartanburg's Christian Supply Company, Wal-mart, and websites such as www.bn.com http://www.bn.com  and www.amazon.com http://www.amazon.com.

After graduation (cum laude) from Presbyterian College, Ellison finished her MA at Converse College and a Ph. D. from the University of Alabama. She has served as editor for Royal Service, the national women's magazine for WMU, for the Southern Baptist Convention, and was executive director of the Southern Baptist Women's state department located in Fresno, CA. Retired in Spartanburg, she speaks at women's conferences with Women by Design Ministries, Inc.

Tommie Ellis Reece '71, program manager for the Lifelong Learning program at Furman University, has been appointed president-elect of the South Carolina Association for Higher Continuing Education (S.C.A.H.C.E.). S.C.A.H.C.E. was formed in 1977 and works to promote continuing education in order to better serve students and other consumers of continuing education programs. The membership is comprised of public and private, two- and four-year college and university continuing education directors and facilitators. Tommie joined Furman in 2001. Prior to that, she spent 22 years at Greenville Technical College, where she served as director of admissions and enrollment. She was elected to the Greenville County School board in 1996, and has served the board as secretary, vice chair and chair.

 

Class of 1972

Rev. J. Barry Shatzer, D.Min. '72 retired early from the Presbyterian Ministry due to health reasons.  His retirement service was celebrated at the July 24, 2007 meeting of the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia.

Class of 1974

Bud Albright ’74, was recently administered the oath of office in Washington, DC as Under Secretary for Energy by the Secretary of Energy, Samuel W. Bodman. Bodman said he was pleased to have Bud on his leadership team and was confident his background and unique expertise would be invaluable as the Department works aggressively to advance President Bush’s bold energy agenda.”

As Under Secretary, Albright will oversee the Department’s Energy and Environment programs, including: the Offices of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Environmental Management, Fossil Energy, Legacy Management, Nuclear Energy, and Radioactive Waste Management.

Albright comes to DOE from the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served as Republican Staff Director for the Committee on Energy and Commerce while working to address challenges facing the country’s energy, environmental, telecommunications, and health industries.  Albright was previously Vice President of Federal Affairs at Reliant Energy, and has served as Deputy Associate Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as Deputy General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  Albright holds degrees from Presbyterian College in his home state of South Carolina and the George Mason University School of Law.

Class of 1976

Stebie Wells Thompson '76 is currently a music educator at Hemby Bridge Elementary School in Indian Trial, NC. She teaches K-5 music classes and directs a non-auditioned chorus. Stebie has received numerous grants to support her music programs. She incorporates North Carolina facts, people, social studies, and local events in the music curriculum. She received a Master of Arts from Furman University and also holds a North Carolina and South Carolina Sixth Year Specialist Degree. Stebie has held music positions in Laurens, SC and in Thomasville City and Union County, NC. She is a member of the NCMENC and served as an officer in the elementary division of SCMENC. Stebie has been selected 'Teacher of the Year' four times during her 30 years of teaching. She recently served on the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Music Criteria Committee. She continues to be a life-long learner by regularly attending the Silver Burdett Summer Workshop at Appalachian State University in Boone, and the Presbyterian Music Conference at Montreat, NC.

Buren Blankenship '76 and his wife, Luanne, are living in Starkville, MS, where Buren is now the pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

 

Class of 1979

Fulton Ervin '79 has been promoted to CFO of McLeod Health. Fulton has served McLeod Health since 2005 as the Associate Vice President of Finance and most recently held the position of Interim CFO since February 2007. Fulton received his Masters in Business Administration from Francis Marion University. He is married to Joan Ervin and they have two sons, Sam (20) and Gavin (15).

Gwynn Frazer McGregor ‘79, Ina Nelson Jones ‘79, Claire Cowsert Dees ‘78, and Gay Todd ‘82 had a reunion on a cruise to Alaska at the end of August 2007. They all enjoyed fabulous food and lots of laughter with fantastic friends.

Class of 1981

Darrell Parnell '81 is now retired from the US Army and is a social studies teacher at Wright Middle School in Abbeville, SC. Cathy Young Parnell '83 is an instructor in Abbeville's Adult Education program. Their oldest child, Claire, is a senior at Erskine College. Their other children are Wade (11) who is in the 6th grade, and Katie (7) who is in the 2nd grade.

Class of 1985

Dan Roberts '85 recently joined NumeriX LLC, as a technical writer, in their New York headquarters. NumeriX provides pricing and risk analytics software for structured financial products. He is living in Manhattan with his domestic partner, Michael "Eagile" Masker. Dan and Eagile celebrating 12 years together in November 2007.

Judy Rodda '85, husband Kirk, son, Nathan (12) and daughter Emma (9) are currently living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (January through June 2008) for Kirk's Sabbatical from the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. Judy is about half way through a PhD researching abundance and distribution of one of the groups of an endemic dolphin from New Zealand called the Hector's Dolphin.

Class of 1986

Doug Hand '86 has had quite a bit of change in his life the past year. He took a new job in September of 2006 as director of operations for Orkin and Associates, a real estate investment firm in Alpharetta. Doug also got married in May of 2007 and now has 4 step children, his son Tanner, and a new baby on the way. The family is living in Roswell, GA where they keep in touch with a lot of PC folks.

Andy Walker ‘86 has been elected 2008 president of the South Carolina REALTORS. With over 23,000 members, the REALTORS is the largest professional trade association in South Carolina. Andy has been a REALTOR since 1989 and became a partner in Bollin Ligon Walker REALTORS 1n 1996. The firm specializes in residential brokerage and property management in the Columbia, SC area. Andy's partner in the firm is Laine Ligon, Sr. '70. Other REALTORS in the firm that are PC graduates are Laine Ligon, Jr. and Rawlings LaMotte (both Class of 1999). Andy is married to the former Elizabeth Hopkins of Columbia. They have 3 children: Ginny (10), Andrew (8), and Margaret (5). The Walkers reside in Columbia.

Class of 1987

Major Jeff Long (USAR) ’87 returned from a year's tour in Iraq this past June. He served on a Military Transition Team (MiTT) as the personnel and financial management advisor to an Iraqi Division. Jeff completed his doctoral degree from University of South Carolina in 2005 and is presently employed with Fairfield County School District as the Federal Programs Director. He resides in Lamar, SC with his wife, Karen, and children, Paris and Jaret.

Jack Graham ’87 and Lynne Meyer Graham ’89 report that life is busy and full where they live in Yorktown, VA. Jack continues his Army Civilian and Army Reserve careers while being actively involved with their church through the Worship team and Home Groups. Jack recently completed Battalion Command and is now the Inspector General for an Army Reserve Division. He was also recently selected for the Army’s Senior Executive Leader program and will be in residence at Harvard this fall for the Kennedy School of Government’s Senior Executive Fellows program as well as an exchange program with NASA in the spring plus numerous other Federal Executive Institutes courses and seminars followed by an academic year at the War College. Lynne has specialized in care and treatment of Cystic Fibrosis patients from her business and respiratory therapy degrees and is working part-time with the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter in Norfolk, VA as well as Women’s Ministry and keeping up with Joy (16), Jackson (8), and James (7). Lynne and Joy just returned in September from a mission trip in Romania working with orphans.

  Steven Durst '87 is currently deployed in Iraq, his 4th tour of duty with the Army Reserve's 360th Civil Affairs Unit. He previously served our country in the first Gulf War, Bosnia, Afghanistan. In February 2008, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel during his current deployment. He will return home from his 4th deployment in June. Steve was recently married to Catherine Hodges, PC class of 1995, and is the son-in-law of Dewitt Hodges, PC class of 1965. Steve has worked for Forest Laboratories in management and sales capacities since 1998. Steve and Catherine reside in Mt Pleasant, SC.

 

Class of 1988

Michelle Stamp Avent '88 is living in Florence with her husband Fred and 4 daughters: Covington (18), Ashton (16), Bailey (12), and Della Shaw (2). Michelle is a stay-at-home mom and Fred coaches basketball and golf at Trinity Collegiate School.

Bradley D. Thacker '88, a Spartanburg native, has been named Vice President of Quality at Nissan North American (NNA). In this role he will oversee quality activities in Nissan's manufacturing operations. Brad joined Nissan in August 2005 as director, Product Quality and was promoted to senior director for Product Quality in April 2006. He resides in Brentwood, TN.

Class of 1990

Kenneth Rickey Heaton '90 and Christina Louise Cox were married November 10, 2007 at Abstract's Gallery in Fountain Inn, SC. The bride is a graduate of North Greenville University and is employed as a sales representative at Synnex Corporation. The groom is employed as a sales manager at J. Duncan and Associates. The couple will reside in Greer.

Coley Mynatt '90, George Nicholson '90, Paul Reaves '90, Greg Sheehan '90, and Mike Vaughan '90, from the Christian Rock Band "Children At Heart", which began at PC in the late 80's, will be having a one-night 20th Reunion Concert on January 26th, at The Watershed in Lexington, SC. Mark Jones '90 was Grand Marshall in the Memphis Gay Pride Parade this past June. He is living in Memphis, TN.

William L. Schafer III '90 and wife, Katherine Carmichael Schafer, announce the birth of their son, Matthew Wellington Schafer, born September 5, 2006. The family resides in Augusta, GA.

Tim Bussart '90 is currently pursuing a management degree with Publix Super Market. Tim said, "I am dating a wonderful lady I met through e-harmony." Tim welcomes any correspondence from the classmates from 1988-1993.

Dr. Jennifer E. Woodward '90 was appointed Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on October 1, 2007. In addition to her new appointment, Dr. Woodward holds the positions of Administrative Director for Research and Academic Affairs at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute and Research Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

Class of 1991

Tom Free '91 reports that he has completed his first year as a Paramedic/Firefighter for the Safety Harbor Fire Department. He would love to hear from any of his classmates. Tom is living in Clearwater, FL.

  Greg Tallant '91 was ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church in July of 2007. He is serving as an assisting priest at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Rome, GA. In attendance at the ordination were Dr. Dean Thompson and the rector of St. Peter's, the Rev. Roger Ard '73. Greg is pictured at the ordination with his family: wife Emily, and sons Andrew (8) and James (6).

 

 

Class of 1992

Stephanie McLaughlin Rawlinson '92 and husband, Kevin, welcomed a daughter and second child, Eleanor Love Rawlinson (Ella) on November 17, 2006. After a difficult pregnancy, Stephanie took several months of leave from work. In April, Stephanie did return as a Commercial Real Estate Developer and the Broker-In-Charge of The McLaughlin Company. Kevin is the CPA and Controller for the City of Florence where the couple reside with both Ella and big sister Mary Catherine .

Nedra Herbster Ulrich '92 and Phil Ulrich '93 announce the arrival of their third child and first daughter, Sarah Kay Ulrich, born December 20, 2006. Nedra, Phil, son Carey (11), son Andrew (9) and Sarah are moving to Peachtree City, GA where Phil has been appointed to the position of Vice President, Human Resources for Cooper Industries.

Class of 1993

Kathryn Spearman Mahon '93 and husband, Tom, welcomed their second child, Caroline Suzanne Mahon, on November 2, 2006. Kathryn is the marketing and communications manager for Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association. Caroline's big brother Wil is 2 years old. The family is living in Kent, OH.

Class of 1994

Bronwyn Ann Coltrane '94 and husband, Mike Anderson, welcomed a daughter and first child, Harper Callie Anderson, on April 18, 2007. The family resides in Takoma Park, MD where Bronwyn is an assistant principal at a middle school and Mike works as an attorney at the DC court of Appeals.

Ashlee Benjamin Davenport '94 and Jeff Davenport '93 have two children, Harmon (7) and Amelia (4). Jeff owns his on land surveying company with partner and PC graduate COL Corey Cannon '78. Ashlee is in her 10th year of teaching science at Clinton High School and received national board certification during the 2006-2007 school year.

Ann Marie Blair Kennedy '94 and Brian Kennedy '93 announce the birth of their daughter, Blair Bernadette Kennedy. Blair was born on August 30, 2007 and joins big brother, Jax, in the family.

Class of 1995

Richard "Lucky" Wright '95 and Elizabeth Marie Disharoon, a 2001 graduate of The Julliard School, were recently engaged in Nassau, Bahamas and will be married September 20, 2008 in New York City's East Village. Richard works in Rockefeller Center as Vice President of Product Communications for State Street Corporation's Foreign Exchange platform, Currenex. After getting married he says he looks forward to putting on weight and wearing overalls most of the time.

Melinda Diller Beres '95 was recently named Partner with Hunton & Williams LLP. She lives in Charlotte, NC, with her husband, Derek, who is an investment banker with Edgeview Partners.

Kristi Lee Griffin ’95 and Chris Griffin ’96 recently enjoyed vacationing on Hilton Head Island with their twins, Kathryn (Katie) Maree and Connor Christopher. They were born September 17, 2006. They also enjoyed visiting Jennifer Tanner Walter ‘95, her husband, Paul and their daughter Hanna who live in Hilton Head. The family is still living in Gainesville, GA where Kristi continues to work at Bates, Carter, an accounting firm in Gainesville. Chris continues to teach construction and coach football at Flowery Branch High School. He has been there since the school opened in the fall of 2002. They would love to hear from any PC grads that live in the area!

Michael Burriss '95 and Erin Gray were married on August 31, 2007 in Charleston, SC. Michael is a Market Manager at Cytec Industries and Erin is employed as a Pediatrics Nurse. The couple resides in Marietta, GA.

Carroll Roe Farmer '95 and Jason Farmer announce the birth of Ellis McComb Farmer. Ellis was born July 25, 2007. She joins big sister Frances (7) and brothers Robert (6) and Patrick (18 months).

Karen O'Connor-Floman '95 her husband Mats Floman, and their son Oskar Floman welcomed a new family member in May 2006: a son and little brother Liam Floman. The family resides in Washington, DC, where Liam loves to "test" all the playground equipment (and his parents), Oskar loves kindergarten, Mats loves solving computer problems at Buchanan Ingersoll PC and singing in a Finnish-language octet, and Karen loves her new job as Director of Communications for Communikids Language School for Children (which is only somewhat less challenging than her other "job" as U6 soccer coach for Stodert Youth Soccer). They'd love to hear from friends at mkfloman@starpower.net.

Avery Cheves Wolff '95 and Luke Wolff '95 joyfully announce the birth of their fourth son, Stewart Amos Wolff. He joins brothers Lucas (11), Levi (9) and Graham (6). The Wolffs have recently moved back to Columbus, Georgia after spending eight years in Rochester, Minnesota where Luke was an orthopedic surgeon at the Mayo Clinic. Upon returning home, he has joined the St. Francis Orthopedic Institute, specializing in joint replacement and trauma surgery. Currently, Luke is in Afghanistan where he is serving as an orthopedic surgeon with the Army Reserves until June. And though she is currently not employed by anyone who actually pays her, Avery counts it a privilege to be home and keep the boys from killing one another.

 

Class of 1996

Kathryn Jones '96 and Weston Edmunds were married on April 14, 2007 in Atlanta. Weston is a '94 graduate of The Citadel. Kathryn's sister, Courtney (Jones) Howard '92 served as Matron of Honor. Class of 1996 grads in attendance included Clare (Pofahl) Charnley, Jennifer (Neale) Hickey, Brian and Kara (Hemenway) King, Amanda (McReynolds) Kirk, Marsha McSpadden, Anna (Hunt) Mills, Emily (Meyers) Stevens, Elizabeth (Griffith) Gentle, Mary Beth Thomas, Liz (Dukes) Gobbel, Ami (Pitts) Stephens, and Mark Martin. Other PC grads in attendance included Robert Thomas '94, Scott Ambrose '94, Leslie (Robinson) Olds '97, Barron and Betsy (Chesno) Grier '94, Brad Stevens '95, and Edward Godfrey '95. Kathryn is Vice President of The Renn Wealth Management Group, and Weston is Vice President of Dow Networks, Inc. The couple lives in Atlanta.

Grahame Long '96 and Lissa Sumner Long '98 welcomed a daughter and first child, Macie Reynolds Long, on November 20, 2006. Lissa is the chaplain for Odyssey Hospice in Charleston, SC and was recently recognized by the Charleston Atlantic Presbytery for her certification in Christian Education. Grahame is in his eighth year as curator of The Charleston Museum. He has just published his fifth article for Lowcountry Living magazine, and will be one of two keynote speakers at the 2008 Madison Antiques Show in February. The Longs split their time between Charleston and Edisto Island, SC.
George S. Wham Jr. '96 and his wife Julie were blessed with their first child, George Samuel Wham, III on January 16, 2007. Samuel's birth came just one month after, George earned his doctorate in Health Education Administration with a concentration in athletic training/sports medicine from the University of South Carolina. Currently, he serves as the head athletic trainer at Pelion High School and teaches in USC's athletic training education program. Although she has reduced her hours to spend more time with Samuel, Julie continues as the pharmacy coordinator at Lexington Medical Center. The happy family resides in Lexington, SC.

Edward Wiggers '96 and Ann Zgrodnik were married in Ann's home town of Hatfield, MA on May 27, 2007. Ann and Ed met while on active duty in the Army's Judge Advocate General's Corps, and both are currently attorneys with the Department of Justice in Washington, DC. They are also both serving in the Army Reserves. The couple makes their home in Alexandria, VA.

Jennifer Brim Rackley '96 and Dan Rackley are happy to announce the birth of their second daughter, Ruth McAllister Rackley, on November 18, 2007.  She joins big sister, Rae who is now 3 years old.  Jennifer is enjoying spending time at home with her girls.

Class of 1997

Cassandra Lemae Jackson '97 and John Rutledge Yarborough were married June 23, 2007 at Nazareth Presbyterian Church in Moore, SC. The bride is employed as a chemistry teacher at Boiling Springs High School in Boiling Springs, SC. The groom attended Lees-McRae College and is employed as Food Manager at Christ Church School in Greenville, SC. The couple will live in Lyman, SC.

Laura Cain Mahony '97 and her husband, Dru, joyfully announce the birth of their first child, Evan Banks Mahony, who was born on December 19, 2006.

Anne Marie Goldsmith '97 and Charles Wheeler Chotvacs, both of Arlington, VA, were married August 25, 2007, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC.  The bride earned her Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Georgia.  She is a professional staff member for the Appropriations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, DC.  The groom earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History from the University of Colorado and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Denver College of Law.  He is an attorney with Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP of Washington, DC.

David Lominack '97 has been elected to the Board of Trustees for The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina. The foundation is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System and is committed to addressing the needs of the poor and underserved in South Carolina. David served on the Foundation's Finance Committee prior to his election to the board. He is a graduate of Leadership Greenville and currently serves as executive vice president and Midlands market president of Carolina First Bank in Columbia. David and his wife, Courtney, have two children, Henry and James.

Chris Wilkins '97 has accepted a position as Chief Financial Officer for Paving, Products and Services, a regional paving company located in Piedmont, SC. He and his wife, Lindsay Fayssoux Wilkins ‘99, live in Greenville with their son and daughter, Jay and Addison. Lindsay is a stay at home mom with her children.
