Alumna takes medical mission trip to Africa
Over the summer Tiffany Megary ’92, a doctor at the Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, Maryland, took a medical relief mission trip to Nianfongo village in the west African nation of Berkina Faso.
In addition to spreading the gospel, Megary provided medical care for the Tiefo people group living in the village. Megary helped establish a triage area, an examination room, and a pharmacy area to help those in need. During the three-and-a-half-day medical clinic, she saw approximately 250 people and treated diseases including leprosy, measles, edema, a variety of serpent bites, and more.
“It was truly an enlightening and educational time for me,” Megary said, “and hopefully a blessing to those who came to see us.”
Megary, with the help of BWMC, raised funds to purchase various medications and supplies, most of which the villagers did not have. She also taught the village’s health providers how to use the medications and supplies.
“It was really an amazing experience,” Megary said. “It was also enlightening to see how so many people all over the world live in utter poverty, but the children are smiling and laughing just the same.”
Cindy Bodie, an administrative assistant at PC, also took the medical relief mission trip to Burkina Faso. Matt Freeman, a senior and son of Garry Freeman ’81, and junior Zach Whitt traveled to the same village a week before the medical mission group.
