Art majors visit New York museums

Twelve junior and senior art majors and art professors Mark Anderson and Ralph Paquin recently traveled to New York City to visit some of the world’s most renowned art museums.

They toured the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They also visited the Whitney Museum of American Art, independent art galleries in the Chelsea art district, and a gallery exhibit opening in midtown Manhattan.

“(The trip) has indisputably been the ultimate enhancement to my college career,” said Michelle Thilges , an art and English major. “I feel that this trip has helped to grow my educational horizon more than anything in college thus far.”

While the group saw works by painters such as Degas, Monet, Picasso, Klimt, and Van Gogh and attended a Jasper Johns exhibit at the MoMa, Thilges says the trip was not mere museum crawling.

“This trip was more than a chance to see some famous pieces of art,” she said. “Seeing these works in person gave me a glance into the minds of some of the most revolutionary people in history.”

“Because of this trip,” Thilges added, “I have been challenged to see the world in new ways. I genuinely believe that a trip of this caliber is integral for every student seeking to further his or her educational studies. It is my fervent hope that future generations of students at PC will be able to share with me this opportunity for exploration, challenge, and cultural and educational enlightenment.”

PC offers Art and Art History majors. During their senior year, students who major in Art exhibit their work on campus. Work by PC art majors Maggie Poole, Liz Boley, Erin Dooney, and Andrea Riveros is currently on exhibit at the Harper Art Gallery.
