Biology

"Life reduced to its component parts is life demeaned."

Ursula Goodenough

The Sacred Depths of Nature

You are a biologist. In fact, there is an instinctive biologist in every one of us. From childhood observations of a garden insect to appreciation of the song of the morning dove; from fascination with the invisible microscopic world to focus on the workings and wonder of the human body - we have all interacted with, and more importantly appreciated, the living world. A biologist is one who studies life.

As a biology major you will hone this natural curiosity of the living world, acquire both breadth and depth of knowledge as a biologist, and then move forward to meaningful endeavors in the areas of the health sciences, graduate research, positions in higher education, and the environmental fields.

Our graduates enroll in noted institutions such as the Medical University of South Carolina Medical School, the University of South Carolina Pharmacy School, Johns Hopkins University Nursing School, Vanderbilt University Graduate School, University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Vermont Law School, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and the Georgia Aquarium.

Students sell, plant trees

Sammy Allen and Joe Hammond sold tree saplings as part of a project for Dr. Inman's Environmental Science class.

"The tree sale has helped me increase my knowledge about different types of trees," says Hammond, "and given me an appreciation for teaching people about trees."
