PRESBYTERIAN PLACES FOUR ON THE 2002 PRESEASON ALL-SAC BASEBALL TEAMS

ROCK HILL, SC ­— Presbyterian College placed four players on the 2002 South Atlantic Conference preseason All-Conference teams announced today by league officials.

Lenoir-Rhyne had three first-team selections, while Catawba, Presbyterian and Wingate each placed two on the first team. Wingate led the way with six total selections on the preseason team.

Presbyterian first baseman Matt Warren, who had 14 home runs last year, and pitcher Richard Barkley, who averaged 7.88 strikeouts per nine innings, were first-team selections. Warren is a preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball. On the second team for the Blue Hose are outfielder Chris Turco and designated hitter Heath McCutcheon.

Lenoir-Rhyne shortstop Jared Caputo, who batted .373 and was the Tournament Most Valuable Player last year, is one of three Bears on the team. Also from the Bears is second baseman Craig Sizemore, who had 20 doubles and 60 RBI last season, and outfielder Chip Bradford, who hit .395 last year.

Carson-Newman was represented by outfielder Aaron Shaffer, who had 62 RBI last season, on the first team and pitcher Ryan West, who recorded six saves, on the second team.

Wingate pitcher Louie Mitcham, who recorded a SAC-high 11 saves last year, and outfielder Chris Torres, who hit .403 with 61 RBI, were first-team selections. Torres was an All-South Region member last year, and a third-team All-American. Catcher John Spencer, pitcher Robert Stover, second baseman Stuart James and third baseman Andrew Romberger were named to the second team.

Catawba shortstop Chad Hill, who led the SAC in hitting last year with a .408 average, and designated hitter Israel Morrow were named to the first team, while pitcher Zach Snyder was chosen for the second team.

Mars Hill pitcher Daniel Stewart, who had a 6-2 record with a 3.24 ERA last season, was selected to the first team, while shortstop Nick Philemon, and outfielder Logan Flynn were named to the second team.

Representing Tusculum College is third baseman Jose Martinez, who hit .373 last year, on the first team and outfielder Casey Taylor on the second team.

Newberry placed catcher Alex Kellner on the first team and first baseman Dean Walker on the second team. Kellner hit 19 home runs last year.
