BLUE HOSE BASEBALL RECOGNIZES FIVE PLAYERS  AT THEIR ANNUAL BANQUET
PC’s Bouknight, Carter, Martunas, Rice, & Richie 
earn individual accolades

CLINTON, SC — Presbyterian College’s baseball program held their annual team banquet earlier this fall and Ty Bouknight, Jamie Carter, Matthew Martunas, Davis Rice, and Brian Richie were honored for their outstanding performances. The banquet’s key note speaker was none other than former Los Angeles Dodgers standout Brett Butler. Butler spoke on overcoming adversity and making the most out of every situation.

Five players were honored for their outstanding achievements during the 2000 season. The following is the list of those honorees:

Bouknight, a 5-10, 170 pound senior outfielder from Leesville, SC, was named the team’s Most Valuable Player winner. Bouknight excelled in the field, throwing out three baserunners in 2000, giving him 18 in his career. In addition, he posted 108 putouts and hit .348 with 18 stolen bases. His 81 hits and 52 RBI’s rank fifth-best in the program’s single-season history while his 59 career stolen bases ranks third-best in program history. For his efforts, Bouknight was selected to the first team All-South Atlantic Conference and All-South Region teams.

Carter, a 5-10, 150 pound senior shortstop from Chapin, SC, was named the team’s Golden Glove Award winner. Carter earned great distinction amongst his peers by becoming just the third shortstop in the modern history of PC baseball to win the best fielder’s award. He excelled in the field all year, posting a .927 fielding percentage while becoming the #2 single-season record holder with 143 assists. His 263 career assists also place him sixth on the all-time list among infielders. At the plate, Carter hit .304 and .308 respectively in 1999 & 2000.

Martunas, a 6-2, 180 pound lefthanded pitcher from Cherry Valley, MA, was named the team’s Cy Young Award winner. Martunas posted a 5-2 record on the mound in 2000 while allowing only four hits per start and limiting his opponents to a .206 batting average. Martunas was named to the first All-South Atlantic Conference team and during his three-year career posting a 13-4 record (.764 winning percentage) which puts him first in program history among starters. This past June, Martunas was drafted in the 18th round by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Rice, a  6-2, 175 pound second baseman from Clinton , SC, was named the team’s  Rookie of the Year Award winner. Rice, a true freshman, played in 49 of 57 games in 2000 while posting a .272 batting average with seven stolen bases. He was walked 21 times and struck out only 17 times while posting a .941 fielding percentage.

Richie, a 6-0, 190 pound outfielder from Irmo, SC, was named the team’s Silver Bat Award winner. Richie led the team with a .356 batting average and added 73 hits, and 10 stolen bases in 56 games. He has a lifetime batting average of .326 and his 61 runs scored in 2000 ranks fourth all-time in program history. For his efforts, Richie earned first team All-South Atlantic Conference and second team All-South Region honors.

The Blue Hose are coming off a 37-20 overall record including a 13-9 mark in South Atlantic Conference play, good for fourth-place. PC earned their fourth straight national ranking and the 37 wins is the second most single-season wins in program history. In addition, the program tallied their fourth straight 30-win season and led the SAC in fielding percentage for the third straight year.
