BLUE HOSE BASEBALL SPLITS HOME OPENER DOUBLEHEADER WITH BREVARD COLLEGE

CLINTON, SC -- The Blue Hose baseball team opened up their home opener with a doubleheader against Brevard College today.  PC (2-3) won the first game with some timely hitting and great pitching 6-2, while Brevard (1-1) pulls out the second game with an 8-6 victory.

In the first game, the Tornados wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on a single by junior third baseman David Tollison (Greenville, SC) to score teammate freshman Travis Free (Kingsport, TN) from third.  PC answered right back in the bottom up the first when sophomore first baseman Matt Warren (Lexington, SC) singled to left field to score sophomore third baseman Davis Rice (Clinton, SC) from second.  The game would stay tied until the fifth inning when Brevard senior right fielder Ace Legoff (Saugerties, NY) led off the inning with a triple down the right field line and later scored on junior second baseman Billy Hayes’s (Fredricksburg, VA) single to right field to give the Tornados a 2-1 advantage.  The Blue Hose would break out in eighth inning on Rice’s two run homerun to give PC a 3-2 lead.  The Blue Hose would pick up two more runs on junior left fielder Keagan Broussard’s (Virginia Beach, VA) double down the left field line.  Broussard would later score on sophomore shortstop Tombo Hite’s (Abbeville, SC) single to left field.  This would give PC and senior starting pitcher Michael Burns (Simpsonville, SC) more than enough run support to finish off the Tornados 6-2.  Burns gets his second win and complete game in as many tries improving to a 2-0 record on the season while only given up 1 earned run in eighteen innings pitched.  At the plate the Blue Hose were led by Warren (3-for-4, 1 RBI), Broussard (2-for-3, 2 RBI’s), and Rice (2-for-4, 2 RBI’s).  Getting the loss for Brevard was senior Bobby Dodenhoff who falls to 0-1.

The second game saw the Tornados take a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first when senior first baseman Korre Humes  (Asheville, NC) singled to left to score junior short stop Jeff Speers (Tampa, FL) from second.  Freshman third baseman Scott Lefler (Gastonia, NC) hit a three-run homerun to give Brevard a 4-0 lead.  PC would get two runs back in the bottom of the first on red shirt freshman Jon Marefat’s (Lexington, KY) fielders’ choice to score junior center fielder Chris Turco (Marietta, GA) from third.  The Blue Hose would get another run in the inning to make it a 4-2 ball game.  Brevard and PC would both get two runs in the second, and PC would add one more in the third to make it a 6-5 game.  The Blue Hose would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth when junior second baseman Brad Hurst (Greer, SC) grounded out to third, but sophomore catcher Dusty New (Abbeville, SC) would score from third. The Tornados would answer right back in the top of the seventh with two more runs off of Humes and Tollison singles to put the game away.   Leading the way for the Blue Hose in the second game was Turco going two-for-three with two runs scored. Getting the win for the Tornado’s was junior Bryson Stinson (Marshville, NC) while senior Kevin Felts (Winston-Salem, NC) picks up his first loss of the year.

PC will travel up to Brevard, NC Sunday for a single game starting at 1:00 pm.
