HOSE SWEEP PAST EAGLES 11-8, 3-1 IN SAC BASEBALL DOUBLEHEADER CLINTON,
SC Presbyterian College picked a pair of key wins
today over Carson-Newman College 11-8 &
3-1 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action
Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hose (17-15, 4-3
SAC) opened the doubleheader with an 11-8 victory in game one
behind the stellar play of sophomore shortstop Brian
Grimm (Spartanburg, SC) who hit for the cycle. Grimm
continued his hot streak at the plate after Fridays
five-for-five performance in PCs 12-11 win over Kentucky
Wesleyan College. Grimm went four-for-four with five RBIs
today versus the Eagles in the first game. The Eagles dropped
to 10-17, 2-5 SAC on the season. GAME
#1 PRESBYTERIAN 11, CARSON-NEWMAN 8 PC took a commanding 9-1
lead into the third inning highlighted by a two-RBI double by
Grimm in the first and a RBI
triple in the second. Sophomore Matt
Warren (Lexington, SC) added a three-run homer in the
second. The Eagles fought back with four runs in the third on
a pair of RBI singles by senior second baseman Brian Picker (Ellicott City, MD) and junior first baseman Jason
Southerland (Afton, TN) to cut the lead to 9-5. The Eagles trimmed the lead to 9-8 in the top of the fourth on a three-run homer by junior outfielder Aaron Shaffer (Springfield, OH). PCs Grimm came to the rescue in the fifth inning as he hit a two-run homer to give PC an 11-8 lead and complete the cycle on the day. The Blue Hose would not surrender the lead and rode the arm of senior pitcher Kevin Felts (Winston-Salem, NC) who improved to 6-0 on the season. Felts went eight innings allowing eight runs on 12 hits while striking out eight batters. Sophomore Richard Barkley (Sumter, SC) picked up his third save of the season as well. Carson-Newman starting pitcher junior Brad Schrock (Goshen, IN) took the loss to drop to 2-4 on the season after going five innings allowing 10 runs, nine earned on 10 hits. The Eagles were led at the plate by Shaffer who went two-for-three with three RBIs. PCs Warren went three-for-four with four RBIs. GAME
#2 PRESBYTERIAN 3, CARSON-NEWMAN 1 The Blue Hose picked up
their third straight win of the season on the impressive
pitching performance of senior pitcher Michael
Burns (Simpsonville, SC) who improved to 5-3 on the
season and snapped a three-game losing streak. Burns pitched a
complete game seven inning win allowing one run on six hits
while striking out six batters. Carson-Newmans starting
pitcher junior Derek
Hommel (Parrottsville, TN) had an impressive pitching
performance as well in the loss. Hommel pitched a complete
game seven innings allowing three runs on five hits as he
dropped to 1-3 on the season. PCs Warren was the
difference at the plate in the second game going one-for-two
with a two-RBI double in the
third inning which gave the Blue Hose a 3-1 lead. These two teams return to
action tomorrow with a single game starting at 1:00 pm. |
