EAGLES HOLD ON FOR AN 8-6 VICTORY OVER BLUE HOSE IN SAC BASEBALL ACTION

CLINTON, SC — Carson-Newman’s junior pitcher Matt Huskey (Knoxville, TN) pitched eight solid innings to lead the Eagles to a 8-6 victory over Presbyterian College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon.

Huskey improved to 2-5 on the season after going eight innings allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out 11 Blue Hose batters. Eagles’ relief pitcher sophomore Ryan West (Urbana, OH) picked up his second save of the season coming in to pitch a hitless ninth inning.

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning highlighted by a two-run homer by senior first baseman Larry Ballard (China Grove, NC). PC responded with a three-run fourth inning as Blue Hose sophomore first baseman Matt Warren (Lexington, SC) hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 3-3.

Carson-Newman broke the tie in the sixth inning with three runs to take a 6-3 lead. The Eagles were able to take advantage of two Blue Hose errors to retake the lead. PC cut the lead to 6-4 with Warren’s second homer of the game, a solo shot.

The seventh inning saw the Eagles push the lead to 7-4 on a RBI-single by senior shortstop Kevin Bolden (Talbott, TN). The Blue Hose once again fought back and scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 7-6 on a RBI-single by senior centerfielder Chris Turco (Marietta, GA). The Eagles put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth with a RBI-single by junior designated hitter Jason Linebarger (Belmont, NC).

PC’s starting pitcher sophomore Kurt Hitzeman (Americus, GA) took the loss to drop to 3-4 on the season after going six innings allowing six runs, three earned on seven hits. At the plate, the Blue Hose were led by Warren who went two-for-three with three RBI’s and two homers while Turco went two-for-five.

Carson-Newman was led at the plate by Ballard who went two-for-four with three RBI’s and Bolden who went two-for-three with two RBI’s.

Carson-Newman improves to 11-17 overall and 3-5 in the SAC while Presbyterian falls to 17-16 and 4-4 in the league.
