Carson-Newman upsets No. 3 PC in first round of SAC Baseball
Tournament
NEWBERRY, SC
-- Matt Huskey
(4-7) threw a complete game, scattered nine hits and struck
out four as the No. 6 seed Carson-Newman College upset No. 3
seed Presbyterian College 9-2 in the first round of the 2001
Food Lion South Atlantic Conference baseball tournament at
Kirkland Field Thursday afternoon.
Carson-Newman
improved to 24-26, while the Blue Hose fell to 28-24. The
Eagles advanced to a 12:45 p.m. winners bracket game on
Friday against the winner of Thursdays last game between
Wingate University and Mars Hill College. PC will meet the
loser of the Wingate-Mars Hill game in a 12:45 p.m.
elimination game Friday at Newberry High School.
Presbyterian
jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and
third innings. Chris Turco, who went 4-for-4, doubled
in the first and scored on a single by Davis Rice, who
went 2-for-3. Rice drove in the Blue Hoses final run on a
sacrifice fly in the third.
Carson-Newman
tied it at 2 with a pair of runs in the fourth on a two-run
single by Dylan Paris. The Eagles took the lead for
good at 3-2 an inning later on a Wes Ward RBI single.
Carson-Newman scored another run in the sixth off PC starter Michael
Burns (7-6) on a RBI single by Brian Picker. Picker
and Ward each finished with two hits for Carson-Newman.
The Eagles
broke the game open with a five-run ninth inning highlighted
by a grand slam by Paris, who went 2-for-5 with 6 RBI. It was
the first home run of the season for Paris.
