BLUE HOSE BLAST HOST MOCCASINS 13-4 IN OPENING ACTION OF THE LAINER UPSHAW/PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS INVITATIONAL

LAKELAND, FL – Chris Turco had three hits and two RBI, and three of his teammates also drove in two runs to lead Presbyterian over Florida Southern, 13-4, in the third game of the Lanier Upshaw/Play It Again Sports Invitational. The loss gave Florida Southern (5-5) a split in its two games on day one of its own tournament.

In the final game of the day, Presbyterian (9-7) chipped away early, scoring single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, before exploding for six runs in the top of the eighth to hand the Moccasins a 13-4 loss.

Breaking a 1-1 tie in the third inning was Matt Warren, whose infield single that chopped high over first baseman Josh Hollingsworth’s head scored Turco who had reached with the first of his three hits. The Blue Hose then got a sacrifice fly from Jay Leonard in the fourth and scored another run in the fifth with the help of a hit batsman and two wild pitches.

In the sixth, Presbyterian struck for three runs as the first five batters of the inning reached base. The biggest blow was a two-run triple by Turco that gave his team a 6-1 lead and knocked FSC starter John Connally Barnett out of the game.

In the big eighth inning, Presbyterian sent 11 men to the plate with the first seven reaching base safely. Kevin White’s bases loaded single drove in the first run and a walk by Warren forced in another. Pinch-hitter Joseph Bishop then delivered a two-run single that just got by a diving Hollingsworth at first before Davis Rice and Tombo Hite drove in two more runs to give the Blue Hose a 13-1 lead.

The Moccasins got two hits and three RBI from one of their players as well, as Mark Furbush did the trick with a double and triple. Everett Jones drove in the Mocs’ other run.
