PRESBYTERIAN
BOUNCES BACK TO TOP GARDNER-WEBB, 15-6, SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN
COLLEGE BASEBALL ACTION
BOILING
SPRINGS, NC ---- Presbyterian (S.C.) College made up for a
Saturday sweep at the hands of Gardner-Webb on Sunday
afternoon,
pounding out 15 hits off of six GWU pitchers to take a 15-6
win over the
Division I Bulldogs.
The Blue Hose (30-27) gave up 10 runs to Gardner-Webb in the
first
innings of the three-game series, and fell behind 4-0 after
another
quick start by the home team. GWU's Cory Evans smacked
a two-out, two RBI single to left in the first to start the
scoring and pitcher Rod
Lane launched a mammoth two-run home run to center field
---- his 10th of the season ---- to give Gardner-Webb it's 4-0
edge.
Presbyterian would answer quickly, scoring a pair of runs in
the top of
the second, but Gardner-Webb plated two more runs on Jay
Bennett's
two-RBI single for a 6-2 lead. After the second inning, the
game turned
squarely in favor of the Blue Hose.
Presbyterian took advantage of several bases on balls to score
seven
runs over the next three innings to put the game out of reach.
In all,
Gardner-Webb pitchers issued 12 walks, hit one batter and saw
four
errors committed by the defense. The Blue Hose had plenty of
hits to
contribute to the damage as well, with Kevin White
leading the way with three hits and an RBI in four at bats.
Matt Warren (2-5, 2 runs, RBI), Davis Rice (2-5,
2B, 2 runs, RBI), Heath McCutcheon (2-3, 3 runs, RBI)
and Dusty New (2-5, 2 RBI) each had big days at the
plate for PC. Mark Dudley (2-3) came on in relief of
starter Bryan Betsil to pick up the win, hurling 6.1
innings and allowing only two runs on eight Gardner-Webb hits.
Kurt Hitezman and Mike Noble worked the final
two innings, allowing only one hit to keep the 'Dogs at bay.
Lane (2-1) took the loss for Gardner-Webb, working 2.2 innings
and
allowing five runs on six hits, while striking out two. The
Bulldogs
(26-30) got a perfect 4-for-4 effort at the plate from junior Michael
James to lead a 12-hit attack, but left 11 runners on
base. Cory Evans (2-4, 2 RBI) also had a solid
afternoon in the batter's box.
