Baseball Sweeps Mars Hill MARS HILL, NC Presbyterian College came to Mars Hill and won two
extra inning South Atlantic Conference (SAC) games. The Blue
Hose won game one, 10-9 and then won game two by a score of
3-2. Presbyterian improved to 8-8 in the SAC and 23-22
overall. The Lions fell to 5-10 in conference play and 13-17
overall. In game one, Presbyterian led 7-2 going into the bottom of the
fifth before Mars Hill made a strong comeback. The Lions
scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh and a pair of
runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 8-8 to send
the game into extra innings. Mars Hill hit two solo shots in
the bottom of the ninth to tie the contest. The teams traded
runs in the tenth inning and then in the top of the eleventh,
junior Keagan Broussard (Virginia Beach, VA) singled to
score sophomore Davis Rice
(Clinton, SC) for the game winner. Rice then saw four batters
in the bottom half of the inning but did not let a runner past
second before the game ending out was made. Rice (1-0) picked up his first win of the year for Presbyterian.
Junior Chris Turco
(Marietta, GA) led the Blue Hose at the plate going 3-for-5
with a double and three RBI. Sophomore Tombo Hite
(Abbeville, SC) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a solo
homerun. Junior Karl Ruf took the loss (2-2) for Mars Hill. Junior Nick
Philemon (Greensboro, NC), senior Greg Mulhollen
(Sarasota, FL), and freshman Trinity Phillips (Mars
Hill, NC) each recorded three hits in the loss. Junior Logan
Flynn (Mars Hill, NC), freshman Chadd Fowler
(Rutherfordton, NC) and Phillips each homered in the contest. Game two was a solid pitching dual between Presbyterian senior
right-hander Kevin Felts
(Winston-Salem, NC) and Mars Hill freshman right-hander Jim
Miller (North Ft. Myers, FL). Felts (7-3) threw seven
innings scattering six hits and allowing only two runs. Miller
(2-3) threw 7.1 innings allowing three runs on eight hits. Mars Hill tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh when
junior Josh Marts (Ft. Myers, FL) singled to score
sophomore Matt Roach (Chiefland, FL). The Lions then
had the bases load with one out in the seventh but could not
get the job done. Presbyterian got Mars Hill to ground into a
6-2 fielders choice and then fly out to right to send the
game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, freshman Kevin
White (Spartanburg, SC) doubled to score sophomore Brian
Grimm (Spartanburg, SC) for what would prove to be the
game winner. Grimm got on base by a walk. White led the Blue Hose going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Rice followed
with two hits, a double and a RBI. Philemon led Mars Hill
going 2-for-4 with a solo homerun. The teams will complete the three-game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. |
