Presbyterian Baseball Sweeps Series from Mars Hill
Blue Hose score eight runs in the fifth inning

MARS HILL, NC – Presbyterian College (PC) completed a three-game sweep over Mars Hill College this afternoon at Henderson Field winning easily, 11-3. Presbyterian improved to 9-8 in the SAC and 24-22 overall. The Lions fell to 5-11 in conference play and 13-18 overall. The Lions have lost four in a row.

The game was close until the fifth inning. A solo homerun by senior Robert Beatty (Denver, NC) gave Mars Hill a 1-0 lead in the second. Sophomore Heath McCutcheon (Newberry, SC) singled to score sophomore Brian Grimm (Spartanburg, SC) in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1. Grim reached on a walk. Mars Hill senior Matt Hayes (Indianapolis, IN) scored on a sacrifice fly by Karl Ruf (Pompano Beach, FL) to give Mars Hill the lead back in the bottom half of the fourth. Then the bottom fell out for the Lions. PC scored eight runs in the fifth inning to lead 9-2. PC recorded seven hits, two doubles, a homerun, a hit batter, and a walk in the inning. Mars Hill didn’t help their cause any as they made two errors on top of the hitting barrage. Mars Hill added a run in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore Chadd Fowler (Rutherfordton, NC) hit a solo homerun but that was as close as the Lions would get.

Sophomore Richard Barkley (Sumter, SC) threw a complete game scattering six hits to pick up the win (4-2) for the Blue Hose. Freshman Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC) led PC going 3-for-6 with a homerun, three RBI, and two runs scored. Junior Chris Turco (Marietta, GA) had four hits, two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored.

Junior Josh Marts took the loss (2-6) on the mound for Mars Hill. The Lions’ pitchers allowed 16 hits and nine earned runs in the contest. The Lions’ defense committed five errors on the day.
