PC’s Hurst hits game-winning single in bottom of the ninth

BLUE HOSE SWEEP SEASON SERIES 
AGAINST INDIANS WITH 5-4 WIN TODAY

CLINTON, SC — Presbyterian College junior second baseman Brad Hurst (Greer, SC) came off the bench to hit the game-winning single in the ninth inning to give the Blue Hose a 5-4 win over Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) baseball action Saturday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex.  Full Story...

The win gives PC a three-game sweep of the Indians over the weekend to finish the SAC regular season schedule. The Blue Hose improve to 28-23 on the season 12-8 in the SAC regular season. Newberry falls to 16-34 overall and 5-15 in the league.

PC took a early 2-0 lead entering the fourth inning thanks in part to an RBI-sacrifice by freshman outfielder Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC) in the first and a RBI-single by junior outfielder Keagan Broussard (Virginia Beach, VA) in the second.. The Indians tied the game in the top of the fourth on a RBI-single by senior outfielder Kyle Sherrill (Charlotte, NC) and sacrifice RBI by senior first baseman Todd Yancey (Cayce, SC). Both team added runs in the next four innings as the game stayed tied entering the ninth at 4-4.

After the Indians got the first two outs of the inning, Newberry walked the bases loaded with Hurst at the plate. Hurst hit a shot that dropped over the first baseman’s head to score teammate junior centerfielder Chris Turco (Marietta, GA).

Sophomore third baseman Davis Rice (Clinton, SC) came in to pitch the final out of the eighth and picked up his second career win. Blue Hose starter sophomore Richard Barkley (Sumter, SC) had another solid outing, going eight innings allowing four runs, three earned on five hits while striking out seven Newberry batters. PC was led at the plate by Broussard and Hurst who each went two-for-three with Broussard adding two RBI’s.

Newberry relief pitcher junior Dean Walker (Afton, TN) took the loss to drop to 2-5 on the season after going one and two-third innings allowing one run on two hits and surrendering six walks. Indian starter freshman Stuart Kay (Greer, SC) went seven innings allowing four runs, three earned on six hits while striking out six Blue Hose batters. Newberry was led at the plate by freshman outfielder Gilmore Stevens (Edgefield, SC) who went two-for-three with three runs scored.

Today was Senior Day 2001 at the PC Baseball Complex today. The Blue Hose recognized five seniors Bryan Betsill, Michael Burns, Kevin Felts, Geno Gosnell, and Mike Noble who their efforts over the last four seasons. This quintet led the Blue Hose to a 133-86 overall and 52-26 mark in the SAC, the best record in the league during that span.

The Blue Hose and the Indians will return to action next Thursday, April 18 in Newberry, SC as the Indians will host the 2001 SAC Baseball Championships as part of the Food Lion Spring Sports Festival co-hosted by Newberry and Presbyterian College.
