TUSCULUM
ELIMINATES PC WITH 8-7 EXTRA-INNING WIN AT BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

Herings RBI double to the gap in left-center field in the
10th inning gave No. 5 seed Tusculum College an 8-7 win over
No. 3 seed Presbyterian College in an elimination game at the
2001 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference baseball tournament
Friday night at Kirkland Field.
The Pioneers
(27-23) advance to the 10 a.m. elimination game Saturday
against No. 2 seed Wingate University, which defeated No. 4
seeded Catawba College earlier Friday. The Blue Hose fell to
29-25.
Casey
Taylor started the inning by reaching against PC reliever Davis
Rice (2-1) on a fielding error by PC third baseman Brian
Grimm. Rice got the next two batters out on strike outs
before Hering, who went 2-for-5, laced a double to the
left-center field gap and Taylor scored all the way from first
base.
Tusculum
reliever Justin Aldridge (2-2), who pitched the final 2
1/3 innings, retired the side in order in the bottom half of
the inning.
Tusculum
jumped out to a 5-0 lead as they scored three times in the
third and twice in the fourth. Jose Martinez drove in
the Pioneers first run on a ground out while Pat Compton,
who went 2-for-5, drove in two more with a single through the
right side in the third. Mike Klossner, who went
3-for-6, drove in a run in the fourth with a triple and Steven
Darnell, who went 3-for-5, added a RBI double.
PC rallied to
tie the game at 5 with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Grimm drove in a run on an infield single and the Blue Hose
scored another run on a wild pitch from Tusculum starter Danny
Woodbury. Chris Turco added an RBI single and Keagan
Broussard, who went 2-for-4, had a RBI double. A sacrifice
fly by Rice tied the game at 5.
The Blue Hose
took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Joseph Bishop,
who went 2-for-3, doubled down the left field line to score
the first run while Tombo Hite drove in the other run
on a sacrifice fly.
The Pioneers
knotted the game at 7 in the top of the sixth. Darnell led off
with a triple and came around to score on a single by
Martinez, who later scored on a single by Taylor.
