TUSCULUM ELIMINATES PC WITH 8-7 EXTRA-INNING WIN AT BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Doug Hering’s RBI double to the gap in left-center field in the 10th inning gave No. 5 seed Tusculum College an 8-7 win over No. 3 seed Presbyterian College in an elimination game at the 2001 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference baseball tournament Friday night at Kirkland Field.

The Pioneers (27-23) advance to the 10 a.m. elimination game Saturday against No. 2 seed Wingate University, which defeated No. 4 seeded Catawba College earlier Friday. The Blue Hose fell to 29-25.

Casey Taylor started the inning by reaching against PC reliever Davis Rice (2-1) on a fielding error by PC third baseman Brian Grimm. Rice got the next two batters out on strike outs before Hering, who went 2-for-5, laced a double to the left-center field gap and Taylor scored all the way from first base.

Tusculum reliever Justin Aldridge (2-2), who pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, retired the side in order in the bottom half of the inning.

Tusculum jumped out to a 5-0 lead as they scored three times in the third and twice in the fourth. Jose Martinez drove in the Pioneers’ first run on a ground out while Pat Compton, who went 2-for-5, drove in two more with a single through the right side in the third. Mike Klossner, who went 3-for-6, drove in a run in the fourth with a triple and Steven Darnell, who went 3-for-5, added a RBI double.
