DELIVERS GAME WINNING HIT IN BOTTOM OF NINTH TO PUSH USC AIKEN
PAST THE BLUE HOSE AIKEN,
SC--Troy Armstrong's single up the middle scored Sam
Garau from second base with two outs in the bottom of the
ninth inning to give the USC Aiken Pacers (22-16) a 3-2 win
over Presbyterian College (20-22) in non-conference baseball
action Thursday night (April 5).
Twenty-four
hours after Tavis Cummings blasted a two-run homer to give
the Pacers an 8-6 win in 10 inning over Newberry, Armstrong
provided the heroics in the form of the walk-off single in his
only hit of the night. Jerod
Summer scattered nine hits and no walks in allowing two
earned runs in 8.2 innings of work.
After recording two outs in the ninth, Joseph
Bishop (Greenwood,
SC) singled and brought Tombo
Hite (Abbeville, SC) to the plate.
Head coach Kenny Thomas made
the decision to bring in Andy Mitchell (5-0) who struck
Hite out on three pitches to notch his fifth win of the
season. The
Blue Hose led off the game with three one-out singles and a hit-by-pitch
to claim an early 1-0 lead and threatening for more until Kevin
White (Spartanburg, SC) grounded into an inning ending
5-3 double play. PC picked up their only
other run in the sixth inning as a Kenny
Campbell double down the left field line plated Keagan
Broussard from third to tie the game at 2-2.
Campbell finished 2-for-4 while Broussard was 1-for-3 but
scored both Blue Hose runs.
Clint
Keown led off the Pacers first at bat with a double to
left center.
Butch Martin followed with a single and Tony Hanks
would plate Keown
with a double down the right field line.
A groundout by David Gillespie
scored Martin to give the Pacers a 2-1 lead.
Brian
Prahl (Peachtree
City, GA) tossed 6.0 innings allowing two earned runs on five
hits and
two walks while striking out two.
Michael Burns (Simpsonville,
SC) worked 2.0 innings of perfect
relief, not allowing a hit or walk and striking out four.
Kevin Felts
(Winston-Salem, NC) (6-3) came on in the ninth inning and
surrendered two hits including the game winner to Armstrong in
receiving the loss. |
