WINGATE BULLDOGS SWEEP BLUE HOSE IN SAC BASEBALL ACTION
Bulldogs’ Torres goes seven-for-seven on the day at the plate to lead the way

CLINTON, SC — Wingate University Bulldogs (21-16, 9-4 SAC) picked up a pair wins 13-1, 8-3 in today’s South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader over the host Presbyterian College Blue Hose (19-20, 5-8 SAC) at the PC Baseball Complex.

GAME #1 — WINGATE 13, PRESBYTERIAN 1

Bulldog starting pitcher sophomore Marc Church (Granite Hill, NC) pitched a complete game four hitter, allowing one run while striking out five to lead Wingate to a 13-1 victory. Church improved to 5-3 on the season. PC’s starting pitcher senior Kevin Felts (Winston-Salem, NC) took the loss (6-2) after going four innings allowing five runs, three earned on  three hits.

Wingate broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth, taking a 4-0 lead on a pair of hits and a Blue Hose error. The Bulldogs pushed the lead to 6-0 in the fifth off a leadoff homer by junior third baseman Andrew Romberger (Norristown, PA) and a solo homerun by junior outfielder Chris Torres (Charlotte, NC). The Blue Hose got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning as junior outfielder James Gritter (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) scored on a RBI ground out by junior second baseman Brad Hurst (Greer, SC). The Bulldogs took a commanding 13-1 lead thanks in part to a seven-run eighth inning, led by Romberger’s RBI-double and a RBI-double by freshman first baseman Brandon Wright (Dallas, NC).

Wingate was led at the plate by Torres who went three-for-three with two RBI’s and Romberger who went two-for-five with a homerun and two RBI’s.

GAME #2 — WINGATE 8, PRESBYTERIAN 3

Wingate’s junior outfielder Chris Torres continued his torrid pace at the plate, going four-for-four with two runs scored to lead the Bulldogs to a 8-3 victory in the second game.

After Wingate took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, PC’s sophomore third baseman Davis Rice (Clinton, SC) cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning on a solo homerun. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead thanks in part to a pair of RBI doubles by senior catcher James Jordan (Hamptonville, NC) and sophomore outfielder John Spencer (Charlotte, NC).

Wingate increased the lead to 5-1 on a RBI-single by Romberger in the sixth, but in the bottom of the inning PC cut the lead to 5-3 thanks in part to a RBI-single by freshman outfielder Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC). The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the sixth after the Blue Hose failed to end the inning, Wingate’s junior outfielder Shane Harrelson (Statesville, NC) hit a three-run homer to put the lead at 8-3.

The Bulldogs’ starting pitcher senior Darrell Price (Ramseur, NC) improved to 3-2 on the season after going five innings allowing three runs, two earned on six hits. PC’s senior starter, Michael Burns (Simpsonville, SC) dropped to 5-5 after throwing a complete game, allowing eight runs, three earned on 12 hits.

Joining Torres at the plate for Wingate was Romberger who went two-for-four with one RBI. For the Blue Hose, Rice went three-for-three with a homerun and one RBI.

The two teams will meet tomorrow in the final game of the three-game series starting at 1:00 pm at the PC Baseball Complex.
