BLUE HOSE BASEBALL AVOIDS THE SWEEP BY DEFEATING
WINGATE 11-4 IN GAME 3
PC’s McCutcheon helps lead the way with three hits and four RBI’s
PC’s Barkley goes eight innings allowing only two runs

CLINTON, SC –- Sophomore designed hitter Heath McCutcheon (Newberry, SC) helped lead the Blue Hose (20-20, 6-8 SAC) past the Bulldogs of Wingate University (21-17, 9-5 SAC) by going three-for-four with four RBI’s and one run scored on a two-run homerun in the fifth inning to put the game away for PC with an 8-1 lead.   With the win, PC avoids a sweep by Wingate, who won both games on Saturday.  Sophomore starting pitcher Richard Barkley (Sumter, SC) threw eight strong innings and allowed only two runs on eight hits, walked three, and struck out nine Bulldogs to improve to 3-2 on the season.

The Blue Hose got on the scoreboard early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single to left by sophomore third baseman Davis Rice (Clinton, SC).  PC would go up 2-0 on a ground out by sophomore shortstop Brian Grimm (Spartanburg, SC) to score teammate sophomore first baseman Matt Warren (Lexington, SC) from third.

The Bulldogs answered back in the top of the second inning with an RBI single up the middle off the bat of freshman shortstop David Yount (Forest City, NC).

PC would not go away and put up a 3 spot on the board in the second, fifth, and sixth innings.  In the second inning, junior second baseman Brad Hurst (Greer, SC) had a 2-RBI single to left center field with two outs to give PC a 4-1 lead.  In the fifth, the Blue Hose road the bat of McCutcheon to take an 8-1 lead.  McCutcheon added two more RBI’s in the sixth inning with his single through the left side to score Grimm and Rice on the play.  PC would add their final run of the inning off the bat of sophomore catcher Dusty New’s (Abbeville, SC) single through the right side to score freshman right fielder Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC).

The Bulldogs were led at the plate by junior second baseman Stuart James (Wingate, NC) who went three-for-five and a run scored.  Junior third baseman Andrew Romberger (Norristown, PA), sophomore left fielder John Spencer (Charlotte, NC), and Yount each added two hits. Picking up the loss for Wingate was sophmore starting pitcher Brian Fulp (Winston-Salem, NC) by allowing 14 hits in four innings of work.  With the loss, Fulp drops to 5-1 on the season and records his first loss of his collegiate career.

For the Blue Hose, Rice went four-for-four with an RBI and junior left fielder Keagan Broussard (Virginia Beach, VA), Hurst, Warren, McCutcheon, and New each added three hits apiece.
