HOSE BASEBALL FINISHES
FALL PRACTICE WITH THE ANNUAL BLUE GRAY FALL CLASSIC
Charles Assey, Heath McCutcheon, and Brad Hurst named
CO-MVP's
CLINTON,
SC - The Gray team beats the Blue team 4-1 in the
annual Fall Classic held on the campus of Presbyterian
College to finish the Fall practice session as the Blue
hose get ready for the 2002 Baseball Season.
The
Blue team was led by seniors, Chris Turco and Mark
Dudley as they picked up a 4-2 win in game
one. Junior shortstop Davis Rice, and first
baseman Matt Warren led the attack with Rice
going 4-4 with a double, while Warren was 2-3 with 2
RBI's. Dudley pitched a complete game giving up
just 2 runs over 7 innings pitched as the Blue team took
a 1-0 lead in the series.
Games
2, 3, 4, and 5 took on a whole new flavor as the
pitching from the Gray squad took over. Redshirt
sophomore Charles Assey threw the first of his
two gems in game 2 with 6 innings pitched while allowing
four hits and no runs. Assey, a groundball
specialist, recorded 10 of his 18 outs with
groundballs. Sophomore outfielder Kevin White
paved the way with a 2-3 day including a pair of RBI's
in the 6-0 victory of the Gray team.
In
Game 3, the Gray team started early on route to a 7-1
win. The game was sloppy defensively for the Blue
team and the Gray squad took advantage, scoring seven
runs on just five hits. Sophomore outfielder Philip
Hauserman had a key triple for an RBI to break open
the games in the 5th inning. Hauserman also had a
walk and a hit-by-pitch for a perfect day at the plate.
Game
4 saw another match up of Game 1 starters, Mark
Dudley for the Blue team and junior Richard
Barkley for the Gray team. In a well pitched
game, this time the nod went to Barkley as he pitched a
complete game, seven hitter while recording a 3-2
victory. Barkley walked just two batters while
striking out 10.
The
5th and deciding game was a nail biter into the 5th
inning with Rice pitching for the Blue team battling
Assey of the Gray team. A wild 16 run inning in
the 6th blew the game wide open for the Gray team to
cement the victory and the series. While Assey
continued his masterful pitching that started in game 2,
the offense led by senior Brad Husrt (2-3), Heath
McCutcheon (3-5), and Tombo Hite (3-4).
McCutcheon had two RBI singles in the same inning for
the Gray team.
For
their efforts, Assey was named MVP of the Defense, while
McCutcheon and Hurst were named CO-MVP's for the
Offense. Assey, fresh off shoulder surgery that
kept him out of action last season, pitched 13
innings giving up just one run on ten hits and yielding
only 3 walks. Even more impressive were his 13
groundouts in a complete game victory. Hurst was
6-13 (.461), scored six runs and stole two bases.
McCutcheon was 7-18 (.388) with two doubles, one
homerun, and five RBI's for the series.
