SAC Baseball Players of the Week Announced
Presbyterian and Catawba Claim Awards

ROCK HILL, SC – Presbyterian College’s Richard Barkley was named the SAC Pitcher of the Week and Catawba College’s Spence Southard was selected as the SAC Position Player of the Week, conference officials announced today.

Barkley, a 6-1, 165-pound junior pitcher from Sumter, SC (Lakewood HS) opened conference play Saturday in game one versus Lenoir-Rhyne College with seven strong innings allowing two runs on six hits and striking out seven Bear batters.  Against St. Andrews College, Richard came in to get the Blue Hose out of a jam late in the game.  On the week, Richard had a 2.45 ERA and was 1-0.  For the season, Barkley has a 2.98 ERA, 2-0 pitching record, 42.1 innings pitched, 33 strikeouts, and opponents are batting only .242 against him.

Southard, a 6-0, 190-pound sophomore outfielder from Greensboro, NC (Northeast Guilford HS) hit .679 for week, helping Catawba to five wins in seven games.  Southard had a slugging pct of 1.036, driving in 10 runs.  He had 11 stolen bases for the week, tying a school record and setting a SAC mark with five steals in a win over Limestone.  Southard had multi-hit games in six of the seven during the week, including five games of three or more hits.
