PRESBYTERIAN PICKED FOURTH IN THE
2002 SAC PRESEASON COACHES POLL

ROCK HILL, SC –– Presbyterian College baseball has been picked fourth in the 2002 preseason South Atlantic Conference (SAC) coaches poll announced today by league officials.

Presbyterian was tabbed to finish fourth with 39 points. The Blue Hose, who posted a 30-29 overall record and finished third in the SAC regular season in 2001, received one first-place vote. PC returns the entire starting infield and six pitchers this season.

Carson-Newman College and Lenoir-Rhyne College, who had three exciting battles in the 2001 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament, were picked to finish in a tie for first place for the 2002 season. Each school picked up three first-place votes, in the voting by the eight head baseball coaches in the league, and 56 total points.

Lenoir-Rhyne is the defending SAC regular-season and tournament champs after going 33-18 last season. After losing to the Eagles in the semifinals of the SAC Tournament, the Bears came back to beat the Eagles twice in the finals to claim the tournament title.  Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second game, but Carson-Newman rallied back. The Eagles trimmed the lead to 7-6, but an eighth-inning rally was cut short by a Lenoir-Rhyne double-play.

Wingate University was picked to finish third with 51 points while garnering one first place vote. The Bulldogs received an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals last year.

Catawba College garnered 32 points for a fifth-place predicted finish. Tusculum College was picked to finish sixth with 25 points followed by Mars Hill College and Newberry College.
