LANDER FIGHTS OFF COLD WEATHER AND BLUE HOSE FOR 8-5 WIN
Senators’ use seven-run first inning to key season opening victory

CLINTON, SC —  Lander University used a seven-run first inning to key the Senators to an 8-5 road win over Presbyterian College in collegiate baseball action at the Presbyterian College Baseball Complex Tuesday afternoon. 

The Senators exploded in the first inning highlighted by a three-RBI double from freshman first baseman James Scrubbs (Apopka, FL). Scrubbs later in the inning stole home to give the Senators a early 7-0 lead.

The Blue Hose cut the lead to 7-2 in the top of the third inning when senior outfielder James Gritter (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) drove in a run on a double and junior second baseman Tombo Hite (Abbeville, SC) drove in the other run on a sacrifice. PC added another run in the fourth on a RBI-single by senior third baseman Brad Hurst (Greer, SC) making the score 7-3.

Lander added an insurance run to make the score 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a freshman second baseman McCreight King (Easley, SC) stole third and advanced home on a Blue Hose throwing error. Presbyterian pulled to within 8-5 in the top of the seventh as Hite hit a RBI-double and later scored on a ground out by junior shortstop Davis Rice (Clinton, SC).

The Senators were led by Scrubbs who went two-for-four with three RBI’s and two stolen bases while senior  outfielder Blake Riddle (Chapin, SC) went three-for-four at the plate with a stolen base. Lander stole eight bases on the day.

The Blue Hose were led by Gritter who went two-for-four with two runs scored and a RBI while Hurst went two-for-three at the plate with one RBI.

Lander’s starting pitcher, sophomore Nick Powell (Easley, SC) picked up the win after going six and one-third innings allowing all five runs, four earned on nine hits with four strikeouts. Relief pitcher junior Mark Ray (Lugoff, SC) picked up the save with two and two-third innings allowing only one hit in 11 batters faced.

PC starting pitcher, redshirt sophomore Charles Assey (Cayce, SC) picked up the loss after going two-thirds of an inning allowing seven runs on five hits. Assey drops to 0-2 on the season.

Lander improves to 1-0 on the season while Presbyterian falls to 0-4.
