Saturday, April 20, 2002PC'S HITE AND WHITE SWEEP NEWBERRY AT NIGHT NEWBERRY,
SC
- Newberry played even with Presbyterian College save for two
innings a twinbill on Saturday as PC grabbed a Saturday sweep
of the Indians in a twilight doubleheader 3-2 and 5-1 at
Kirkland Field Saturday night. Game one was a typical Newberry/Presbyterian ballgame, as
Newberrys Jeff
Wicker (Newberry, SC) and PCs
Richard Barkley (Sumter, SC)
went toe-to-toe with complete-game efforts. The game was tied
at two on errorless play heading into the ninth inning when
second baseman Tombo
Hite (Abbeville, SC) smacked a two-out solo homer to
left center on top of the student center behind the field to
break the tie and grab a 3-2 lead. It was his fourth of the
year The Indians had a pair of runners on in the seventh and eighth
innings, but went 1-2-3 in the ninth to drop the first game of
the series. Wicker took the loss (5-5), allowing 10 hits and five walks. He
struck out five Blue Hose. Barkley grabbed the win (6-2) on
eight hits and pair of walks, with five punchouts. Game two started the same and both teams scored a run in the first
five innings. With a tie game in the sixth, PC pushed across
three runs on four hits against Newberry starter
Chris Griffin (Cayce, SC), led by
Kevin Whites
(Spartanburg, SC) line shot off of Griffins right leg
to start the inning. The Blue Hose (24-27, 11-9 SAC) added an insurance run in the ninth
off of reliever Tyson
Azevedo (North Charleston, SC) when
Matt Warren (Lexington, SC)
and White hit leadoff doubles in that inning. Whites hit
scored Warren and completed a 4-for-7 day for the right
fielder. Griffin took the loss for Newberry (1-1). In his six innings of
work, he gave up nine hits and three walks, earning three of
the four Blue Hose runs. Mark
Dudley
(Cayce, SC) pitched the complete-game seven-inning contest to
get the win (7-3). He scattered nine hits and a walk with
three strikeouts, giving up the one run in the victory. Senior Alex Kellner
(Hendersonville, NC) was 5-for-6 for the Indians on the day,
but the Blue Hose kept the bases empty for him during his
times at-bat. From the interesting stat department, there were five intentional
walks in the two games (NEW-3, PC-2), usually when runners
were at second and the pitcher had a 3-0 or 3-1 count on the
hitter. The two teams will conclude the series and the
conference regular season Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kirkland Field. |
