WARREN
AND WHITE HELP PC
SWEEP WEEKEND SERIES AT NEWBERRY
NEWBERRY,
SC
- Right fielder Kevin
White (Spartanburg, SC) knocked in first baseman
Matt Warren (Lexington, SC)
twice as Presbyterian College swept the third game of the
South Atlantic Conference weekend series at Kirkland Field on
Sunday.
The series sweep pushes the Blue Hose (25-27, 11-9 SAC) up to
second place in the league heading into tournament play, after
starting the weekend in the lower half of the standings.
The Blue Hose broke a scoreless game open in the fourth inning when
third baseman Kenny
Campbell (Roswell, GA) drew a leadoff walk from
Newberry starter Joey George (Latta, SC). After moving to second on a groundout,
Campbell scored on a single by center fielder Chris Turco (Marietta, GA) to make it a
2-0 PC lead.
Warren hit a leadoff double for the Blue Hose in the top of the
fifth and White knocked him in with a single to center. White
later scored on a Newberry infield error and Presbyterian was
out in front 4-0
.
The Indians (15-37, 4-17 SAC) closed the gap in the bottom of the
fifth when center fielder
Carlos Gonzalez (New York, NY) was hit by a
Kurt Hitzeman (Americus, GA)
pitch to lead off the inning.
Dean Walker (Afton, TN) singled and right fielder
Dustin Smith (Conway, SC) sacrificed them up a base. Third
baseman Stuart Kay (Greer, SC) hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring
Gonzalez for Newberrys first run of the afternoon and
Walker scored on an infield error, cutting the PC lead to 5-2.
Warren hit a one-out triple in the sixth and was plated once again
by White on a single to left field for his third hit and
second RBI of the ballgame. Warren reached base four times and
was 2-for-3 while White finished 3-for-5 with three singles
all around the outfield.
Both teams posted unearned runs in the seventh and Presbyterian
added an insurance run in the ninth to extend a 7-3 lead.
Newberry first baseman
Travis Moore (Blythewood, SC) belted a two-out, two-run
homer to left field in the ninth, but the Indians got no
closer than the two runs. It was Moores second big fly of
the season.
Hitzeman went the distance for the Blue Hose to get the win (5-3).
He allowed five runs (three earned) on 11 hits and no walks,
striking out one batter.
George took the complete-game loss (1-6). He allowed all 18
Presbyterian hits and pair of walks, resulting in six of the
seven runs to be earned.
Both pitchers hit two batters, while both defenses committed three
errors and turned three double plays on the day.
