PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE TAKES A PAIR OF GAMES AGAINST TUSCULUM 1-0, AND 4-3 IN BASEBALL ACTION
PC’s Richard Barkley threw a complete game one hit shutout in game one

CLINTON, SC – The Presbyterian College baseball team won two games today at the PC Baseball Complex 1-0, and 4-3 against South Atlantic Conference foe Tusculum College.  The Blue Hose improve to 12-15, 4-1 SAC while the Pioneers fall to 13-12, 2-3 SAC.

GAME 1 – PC 1, TC 0

Presbyterian College junior starting pitcher Richard Barkley (Sumter, SC) threw a complete game one hit shutout as the Blue Hose prevailed 1-0.  Barkley gave up an infield single in the first inning to senior right fielder Michael Holt (Jefferson City, TN) and then went 8.2 innings of no hit baseball.  The Blue Hose defense played great behind Barkley making only one error along with some outstanding plays in the outfield.  Barkley allowed three walks and struck out eight batters to record his third win of the season.  Tusculum’s sophomore starting pitcher Steven Ferguson (North Wilkesboro, NC) was equally impressive allowing one unearned run on five hits and striking out six batters, but gets stuck with the loss (3-3).  The Blue Hose scored their only run in the seventh inning with two outs and a runner on second base as freshman shortstop Kip McAlister (Lewisville, SC) reached first on a fielding error by the Pioneers shortstop that allowed senior pinch runner James Gritter (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) to score.   Presbyterian was led by junior second baseman Tombo Hite (Abbeville, SC) who went 3-for-4 with two doubles.

GAME 2 – PC 4, TC 3

In game two, the Blue Hose scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the third inning highlighted by four singles and a sacrifice fly.  Hite, junior first baseman Matt Warren (Lexington, SC), and junior catcher Kenny Campbell (Roswell, GA) all had RBI singles and sophomore right fielder Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC) had an RBI sacrifice fly to right field.  The Pioneers got one run in the top of the sixth inning when senior third baseman Jose’ Martinez (Caracas, Venezuela) hit an RBI single though the left side to score junior centerfielder David McMahon (Knoxville, TN) who reached on a fielding error by the Blue Hose shortstop to start the inning.  In the top of the seventh inning Tusculum made a charge as senior catcher Scott Reames (Mauldin, SC) led off the inning with a single down the right field line.  Junior pinch runner Rusty Dawes (Lanham, MD) came around to score on freshman pinch hitter George Hanger’s (Stauton, VA) double to centerfield to cut the lead to 4-2.  Hanger later scored on McMahon’s single up the middle to make it a 4-3 game. With two outs and the tying run on second base, Blue Hose senior starting pitcher Mark Dudley (Cayce, SC) struck out Martinez to end the game.  Dudley went the distance allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out four batters to push his record to 4-1 on the season.  Pioneers freshman starting pitcher Jason Burleson (Knoxville, TN) threw six complete innings allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out four batters.  Senior centerfielder Chris Turco (Roswell, GA) and Warren led the Blue Hose by each going 2-for-3 in the game.  McMahon and Martinez led the Pioneers going 2-for-4 with an RBI apiece.
