PRESBYTERIAN
BASEBALL SWEEPS ERSKINE 11-10 AND 5-1 CLINTON,
SC
The Presbyterian College baseball team defeated Erskine
College today 11-10 (10 innings) and 5-1 as part of a
doubleheader. The
first game was originally played at Erskine, but was suspended
due to darkness after nine innings of play with the score tied
10-10. Today, April 2, (14 days later) the Blue Hose won
11-10 in ten innings. GAME
1 PC 11, EC 10 (10 INNINGS) With
two outs in the top of the tenth inning junior pitcher Davis
Rice (Clinton, SC) singled over the shortstop and
moved to second base on a past ball by the Erskine catcher.
Senior centerfielder Chris
Turco (Roswell, GA) hit a chopper to shortstop, who failed to make the play, as
Rice scored the go ahead run to give PC an 11-10 lead.
The
Blue Hose were led by senior leftfielder Keagan
Broussard (Virginia
Beach, VA), junior second baseman Tombo
Hite (Abbeville, SC), junior first baseman Matt Warren (Lexington,
SC), Turco, sophomore third baseman Curtis
Bell (Gilbert,
SC), and freshman shortstop Kip
McAlister (Lewisville,
SC) who each had two hits in the game.
Sophomore pinch hitter Heath
McCutcheon (Newberry,
SC) hit a three-run homerun in the top of the sixth in his
only at bat in the game. The Blue Hose went through five pitchers before Rice finally
picks up the win in relief as he throws 2.1 innings allowing
one walk and striking out one batter.
Erskines James
Fender (Awendaw, SC) records the loss going 2.0 innings of work allowing one
unearned run on one hit.
GAME
2 PC 5, EC 1 The
Blue Hose won game two behind a solid outing by junior pitcher
Kurt
Hitzeman (Americas,
GA) who threw 7.0 innings allowing just four hits and one run. The offensive star of the game was Hite who went 3-for-4 with
3 RBI. In the bottom of the third inning Hite drove home a pair of senior in leftfielder James Gritter (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), and Turco with a one out double down the left field line. Erskine scored their only run of the game in the top of the seventh inning on a wild pitch by Hitzeman to make it a 2-1 PC lead. The Blue Hose would answer right back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Bell led off the inning with a double down the left field line and later scored on a balk on the Erskine pitcher. Hite came through once again with an RBI through the right side to score Gritter and give PC a 4-1 advantage. In the eighth inning the Blue Hose added an insurance run as freshman designated hitter Jordan Taylor (Iron Mountain, MI) had a two out doubled to left centerfield and later scored on a throwing error on the Flying Fleet. Freshman pitcher Chad Hinson (Mullins, SC) was stuck with the loss after throwing six innings allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out five batters. Sophomore pitcher Charles Assey (West Columbia, SC) came in relief of Hitzeman to throw two strong innings allowing just one hit and striking out two of the six batters he faced. The
Blue Hose improve to 17-21 overall while the Flying Fleet fall
to 17-20 on the season. The Blue Hose will be back in
action this weekend as they travel to Wingate, NC to face the
Bulldogs of Wingate University for a three game conference
series. |
