Presbyterian
Tops Gardner-Webb 10-0
BOILING
SPRINGS, N.C. -- Presbyterian Colleges Richard
Barkley fanned 12 Gardner-Webb batters, and allowed
only two infield singles, beating the Bulldogs 10-0 in a
complete-game pitching win.
Barkley worked 9.0 innings for his seventh win of the season
(7-2) and allowed only an infield single in the third inning
and a bunt single in the eighth inning. The Sumter, S.C.,
junior hit one batter, but did not issue a walk, and his
defense did not make an error, limiting Gardner-Webb to only
three base runners all afternoon.
The Blue Hose (26-29) scored five runs in the third inning,
taking advantage of three Gardner-Webb errors, a two-RBI
double to left by Davis Rice
and an RBI single up the middle by Keagan
Broussard to take a 5-0 lead it would not relinquish.
Presbyterian added a pair if runs in the sixth and seventh
innings, and scored one run in the eighth for the final margin
of victory.
Gardner-Webb (26-26) starter Jason Palfrey worked 5.1
innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits, with four
strikeouts. Three other Bulldog seniors finished out the game
for Gardner-Webb, combining to allow two runs on eight hits in
the final 3.2 innings of action.
Broussard led the Blue Hose at the plate, going 3-for-5 with
an RBI and two runs scored. Kenny
Campbell (2-3, RBI), Chris
Turco (2-4, run), Rice (2-3, 3 RBI) and Matt
Warren (2-5, 3 RBI) each collected a pair of
Presbyterians 16 hits on the afternoon.
Chip Watts (1-2, HBP) and Blake Lalli (1-3)
collected Gardner-Webbs hits.
Gardner-Webb honored eight seniors before the start of
Sundays contest, which was the final home game for Brook
Collins, Cory Evans, Wes Greene, Adam
Mayes, Palfrey, Dan Rothem, Matt Southwell
and Darin Thompson. The University also retired the
jersey No. 27 of head coach Clyde Miller before the
game in a special ceremony honoring Millers 13-year tenure
at the school. Miller has won 321 games with the Bulldogs, the
most wins in school history. He will retire from coaching
following the 2002 season, but will remain with the University
as an Assistant Athletics Director.
