HITS THREE HOMERUNS AS PRESBYTERIAN AND MONTREAT SPILT A PAIR
OF BASEBALL GAMES MONTREAT,
NC -- The
Blue Hose from Presbyterian College came to town yesterday to
compete with the Cavaliers and came away with a doubleheader
split. Montreat
won the opener 10-7 and Presbyterian took the nightcap 9-3.
Again the injury bug took over for Montreat. Brooks Hollifield was scheduled to throw the first game but before he threw the first pitch he complained of soreness in his elbow and was removed for scheduled game two starter Harpreet Padda. Padda came on and quickly, gave up 5 runs in the first inning to the Blue Hose including two homeruns. Matt Warren hit a three run homer and Kevin White followed with a solo shot. Presbyterian added another run to go up 5-0. Montreat answered in the bottom half with three runs of their own. Chip Pennell had a run scoring single and Tony Peay had a two run single for the Cavaliers. Montreat added three more in the bottom of the 2nd as Price Stevens connected on a two run homer and Chuckie Upshur scored a single by Thomas Reeder. Presbyterian tied the score in the top of the 3rd and even took the lead 7-6 in the 4th. Montreat then put a 3 spot on the board in the bottom of the 5th with the big blow coming off the bat of Freshman Brooks Hollifield. Hollifield added a solo shot in the bottom of the 6th and closer Brian Kestler came on in the 6th and pitched the final two innings for his second save. For
the Cavaliers, Stevens continued his hot streak with a 3x3, 2
RBI performance but he had help.
Hollifield was 3x4 with 3 RBI's and Upshur, Pennell and
Reeder each had two hits apiece as the Cavaliers pounded out
15 hits in the game. In game two, Montreat scrambled for a starter and the ball was given to Freshman Matt Tipton who was making his 2nd career start. Presbyterian again jumped out to a 5 run lead after 3 innings and Tipton gave way to senior Upshur who threw three consecutive shutout innings and Montreat climbed back into the game after Upshur homered and then Pennell reached on a hit by pitch and Reeder homered to cut the lead to two at 5-3. However, the Blue Hose were not to be denied as they scored four big runs in the top of the 7th. White hit a three run homer and Presbyterian added another run to complete the scoring at 9-3. Zach Matthews pitched two innings of relief for the Blue Hose and helped the team earn a split in the doubleheader. |
