BLUE HOSE BASEBALL HOLDS ANNUAL BANQUET

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Baseball team held its annual banquet Monday night honoring its players, coaches, support staff, and fans for a great 2002 season.

This past season the Blue Hose posted a 27-30 overall record and a 12-9 mark in the South Atlantic Conference good for 2nd place in the conference.  Five awards were given out as well as the announcement of this years team captains, senior shortstop Tombo Hite (Abbeville, SC) and senior first baseman Matt Warren (Lexington, SC).  The award winners for the evening are as follows:

MVP and Silver Bat:  Kevin White

Gold Glove:  Davis Rice

Cy Young:  Richard Barkley

PC Hustle Award:  Chris Turco

Rookie of the Year:  Jake Lunnen

Barkley:  Led the Blue Hose pitching staff with a 7-2 record, 3.01 ERA, three shutouts, 107.2 innings pitched, and 90 strikeouts.  He was selected to the 2002 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division II All-South Region second team.

Hite:   Batted .377 with five home runs, 29 RBI’s, and 78 hits.  From his shortstop position he had a .941 fielding percentage. 

Lunnen:   Second on the team with a 2.98 ERA, pitched 54.1 innings pitched and tallied 27 strikeouts. 

Rice:  Batted .323 with three home runs, 26 RBI’s, and 40 hits.  From his shortstop position he had a .928 fielding percentage while committing only 12 errors.  Rice was also selected to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District second team.

Turco:  Batted .267 with 56 hits and 15 stolen bases out of 16 attempts.  Had a .976 fielding percentage from his outfield position.  This was Turco’s second year receiving the PC Hustle Award.

Warren:  Second on the team in hitting with a .403 batting average, eight home runs, 51 RBI’s, and 81 hits.  From his position at first base he had a .985 fielding percentage with only seven errors during the season.  He was selected to the 2002 second team ABCA/Rawlings All-South Region team as well as the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District second team.

White:  Led team in hitting with .425 batting average, .802 slugging percentage, 18 home runs, 72 RBI’s, and 90 hits.  He also registered a .966 fielding percentage and only four errors from his outfield position.  He was selected as 2002 NCBWA Division II South Region Player of the Year, 2002 ABCA/Rawlings second team All-American, and 2002 first team ABCA/Rawlings All-South Region team.
