Presbyterian pitcher Richard Barkley
named Food Lion SAC Tournament MVP

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Presbyterian College senior pitcher Richard Barkley, who threw a shutout in the opening round, then came back on two days rest to pick up the victory in the championship game, was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2003 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament.

Barkley (Sumter, S.C.) was the only pitcher to get two wins in the tournament and only the second pitcher to start two games for the weekend (Catawba’s Chris Abernathy being the second). Barkley lasted six innings in the championship game and allowed five hits and four walks to get his tenth win of the season (10-4). He struck out four batters in his performance. He gave up five hits and struck out seven in a 9-0 win over Newberry in the first round.

Joining Barkley on the All-Tournament team from the champion Blue Hose were Kevin White, Tombo Hite and Davis Rice. White batted .500 for the tournament and shared the lead with nine RBI. Rice hit .400 with five RBI, while Hite hit .389.

Carson-Newman College placed five members on the All-Tournament team: Ricky Luttrell, Chris Martin, John Wallace, Nathan Gravley and Ryan West. Luttrell also had nine RBI, while Martin led the tournament with a .615 batting average. Gravley hit .412. Wallace had 13 strikeouts in a 3-0 win over Mars Hill, while West was the winning pitcher in a 17-2 win over Catawba, where he struck out six and did not allow a walk.

Tournament runner-up Tusculum had four representatives on the All-Tournament team: Rob Bouman, Doug Hering, Aaron Frye and Guy O’Connell. Bouman hit .400 with seven RBI, while Hering hit .412. Frye hit .409 with six RBI. O‚Connell, the SAC Player of the Year, had three home runs.

The final two members of the All-Tournament team are from Catawba. Chad Hill batted .529, while pitcher Zack Snyder struck out a season-high 14 in a first-round 3-2 win over Tusculum.
