DAVIS AND WARREN NAMED TO 2003 VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT BASEBALL TEAM

CLINTON, S.C. – Senior shortstop Davis Rice (Clinton, SC) was selected to the first team Verizon Academic All-District Team III along with senior first baseman Matt Warren (Lexington, SC) who was selected to the second team. 

The Blue Hose seniors led PC to its first outright South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship while finishing 27-24 overall and 12-8 in the SAC regular season.  PC is now ranked third in the South Region and awaits announcement of the 2003 NCAA Division II Tournament field. 

Rice, a 6-2, 176-lb senior infielder is a Physics major who minors in Mathematics with a 3.69 GPA.  Last year he was selected to the Verizon Academic All-District second team and is an eight-time member of the school’s Dean’s List and SAC Academic Honor Roll.  Rice has a .326 batting average and is second on the team in hits (61) and doubles (9).  He has been a mainstay in the Blue Hose infield playing both shortstop and second base throughout the year.  Rice has also been a weekend pitcher and reliever with a 3-3 record, 4.79 ERA, and is second on the team with 46 strikeouts. 

Warren, a 6-2, 222-lb senior first baseman is a Special Education major with a 3.40 GPA.  Last year he was also selected to the Verizon Academic All-District second team.  After transferring from the University of South Carolina he has been a member of the school’s Dean’s List and SAC Academic Honor Roll for five semesters.  On the field Warren led the team with 50 RBI, and was second on the team with 10 homeruns, and 92 total bases.  He also has a .990 fielding percentage from his first base position which ranks second on the team. 

Rice will now go on to the national ballot for Verizon Academic All-American which will be announced May 29.
