HOSE AND LIONS SPLIT SAC BASEBALL DOUBLEHEADER
MARS HILL, N.C. – Mars Hill College’s baseball team
(3-10/11-22) split a double-header with Presbyterian College
(8-6/18-22) today at Henderson Field.
Mars Hill won the first game, 8-3 and then lost 8-0 in
game two. In game one, Mars Hill scored a single run in the first inning and
then the game remained scoreless until the fourth inning.
Presbyterian scored two runs in the top of the fourth
to take a 2-1 advantage before Mars Hill broke the game open
in the bottom half of the inning scoring five runs to lead
6-2. The five-run
inning was highlighted by a three-run homerun from Joe
Weidman (Severna Park, MD) and a two RBI double from Chris
Argano (Marietta, GA).
The Lions added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth
to lead 8-2. Presbyterian
scored a single run in the seventh but Chris Merchant (Front
Royal, VA) who came on in relief of Tom Foster
(Pasadena, MD) in the fifth inning held the Blue Hose at bay. Weidman went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs
scored to pace the Lions.
Brandon Haney (Orlando, FL) was 3-for-3 at the
plate with an RBI, a double, and two runs scored.
Justin Boone (Burnsville, NC) also had two hits
in four at-bats with a couple of runs scored.
Foster picked up the win (2-8) scattering seven hits
allowing only a single earned run.
Merchant picked up his first save of the year throwing
the last three innings allowing only two hits and one run. Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC) was 2-for-4 for the Blue Hose followed by Matt Warren (Lexington, SC) who went 1-for-4 with a solo homerun. Davis Rice (Clinton, SC) took the loss (3-3) on the mound for Presbyterian pitching four innings. Game two belonged to Travis
Hill (Rock Hill, SC) and the Blue Hose.
Hill threw his first complete game and first shutout of
the season as Presbyterian took the three-game series with an
8-0 victory. Hill
allowed only three hits and struck out two Lion batters en
rout to his second win (2-3) of the season. Warren had a huge game for Presbyterian going 3-for-4 with three
RBI and a double. Rice
was 1-for-4 at the plate with three-run homerun in the sixth
inning. Joseph Bishop (Greenwood,
SC) had a couple of hits in four plate appearances for
Presbyterian with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Dawson Plimpton (Boca Raton, FL), Justin Mahon (Ft.
Myers, FL), and Haney recorded the Lions’ three hits in the
contest. Mahon’s
hit was a double. Ryan
Lindsey (Newport, TN) took the loss (1-2) on the mound for
Mars Hill throwing 2.1 innings. Mars Hill will host Erskine College on Tuesday for a double-header
starting at 1:00 p.m. Presbyterian
will play at Southern Wesleyan University on Wednesday night
at 6:00 p.m. |
