BLUE HOSE BASEBALL SWEEP NEWBERRY IN WEEKEND SERIES TO MOVE INTO 2ND PLACE IN THE SAC

CLINTON, S.C. – Solid pitching and some very timely hitting helped give Presbyterian College (21-22, 11-6) an 8-3 victory in the first game, and a 3-1 win in the second game over in-state rival Newberry College (20-24, 7-11) Sunday afternoon.  With the wins the Blue Hose move into second place in the South Atlantic Conference and are now only a half game behind Wingate University for the top spot in the league.

Game 1:  PC – 8, NC – 3

Once again the Blue Hose put two on the board in the first inning and didn’t look back.  Senior first baseman Matt Warren (Lexington, SC) tallied the first of his four RBI in game one in the first inning when he hit a sacrifice fly to score senior second baseman Davis Rice (Clinton, SC).  Junior centerfielder Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC) came home on an error to give the Blue Hose the 2-0 lead after one.  White was two-for-four in the first game with two runs scored as well as going one-for-three in the second game to extend his hitting streak to 32 games.

Warren struck again in the third inning when he crushed a ball over the left field fence with two runners on to give PC a five run lead heading into the fourth inning.  In the fourth, the Indians put one run on the board and another two on in the sixth inning when junior second baseman Chris Griffin (Cayce, SC) hit a two RBI double to left center field.

PC got some insurance runs in the fifth and sixth inning and used three double plays to get junior starting pitcher Travis Hill (Rock Hill, SC) out of some tough jams.  With the win Hill picks up his third win of the season (3-3) after scattering eight hits and giving up only three earned runs.  Hill also pitched his first complete game of the season.  Sophomore reliever Matt Boone (Kernersville, NC) came in to pitch in the seventh inning and picked up his second save of the season.

For Newberry, freshman starting pitcher Pete Stuppiello (Gilbert, SC) took the loss after giving up five runs off of five hits and drops to 4-3 on the season.

Game 2:  PC – 3, NC – 1

Indians junior starting pitcher Billy Alm (Pine Plains, NY) cooled off the Blue Hose bats and only gave up two hits in game two, but PC freshman starting pitcher Robert Cole (Savannah, GA) was equally impressive and the Blue Hose used those hits and two errors to put three runs on the board and defeat Newberry 3-1 to complete the series sweep.

In the second inning Warren scored on a double steal to put PC up by a run, but the Indians tied the game in the fifth inning after sophomore catcher Robert Locke (Lucasville, OH) doubled down the leftfield line and scored senior shortstop Wade Roof (West Columbia, SC).

Warren once again came up big for the Blue Hose in the sixth inning as he reached on a fielder’s choice and scored senior leftfielder Tombo Hite (Abbeville, SC).  Warren then stole his third base of the day and later came around to score an insurance run on a wild pitch.

PC’s Cole notched his second win of the season (2-3) after giving up only one earned run off of six hits while striking out three.  Newberry’s Alm took the loss in a complete game effort while striking out five and giving up only one earned run.

The Indians will be back in action this Tuesday as they travel to USC-Aiken to take on the Pacers in a game schedule to begin at 6:00 pm.  The Blue Hose will travel to Greenwood to take on Lander University at 6:00 pm on Wednesday
