SWEEPS TUSCULUM IN SAC BASEBALL GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --
The Presbyterian College baseball team got timely hitting and
a pair of solid pitching performances as the Blue Hose swept
host Tusculum College in a South Atlantic Conference
doubleheader at Pioneer Park. Phillip Hauserman
(Decatur, Ga.) recorded three hits in the opener to lead
Presbyterian to a 6-5 win. In the night-cap, southpaw Travis
Hill (Rock Hill, S.C.) scattered seven hits as PC won 6-3. The Blue Hose even their
overall record to 8-8 overall and 2-0 in league play, while
the Pioneers (11-8, 0-2 SAC) have dropped three straight
games. Game 1: Presbyterian 6,
Tusculum 5 Presbyterian rallied from a
3-1 deficit with two runs in the sixth and three in the
seventh to win 6-5. The Blue Hose tallied a dozen hits,
including multi-hit efforts by Hauserman, Davis
Rice
(Clinton, S.C.), Kevin
White (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Matt
Bodie
(Aiken, S.C.). Senior Richard
Barkley (Sumter, S.C.) picked up the win in posting his second
complete game of the year. PC drew first blood in the
second frame on Matt Warren's (Lexington, S.C.)
lead-off home run down the left field line. Tusculum answered
with three runs in the fourth inning with the big hit coming
from Mike Calano (Suwanee, Ga.) and his two-run double.
Calano crossed the plate a batter later when David McMahon
(Knoxville, Tenn.) singled him home for a 3-1 TC lead. In the sixth inning, PC
manufactured two runs when Hauserman led off with a single,
stole second and scored on Davis' RBI single. Rice moved to
second on a wild pitch at tied the game at 3-3 on Heath
McCutcheon's (Newberry, S.C.) RBI double. Bodie gave PC
the lead again on his second home run of the season, a solo
shot to start the seventh inning. The Blue Hose added two more
runs in the frame for a 6-3 lead. Tusculum drew within one run
in the eighth inning with a pair of markers, including Doug
Hering's (Okeana, Ohio) two-out RBI double. In the ninth inning, TC got
runners at first and second with two outs, but Barkley got Tim
Wallin (Springfield, Ill.) to fly out to end the game. Barkley surrendered 13 hits,
five runs, four earned, walked none and struck out seven to
even his season slate at 2-2. Tusculum rookie Brian Lovett
(Knoxville, Tenn.) suffered the loss to fall to 2-2 on the
year. Game 2: Presbyterian 6,
Tusculum 3 Presbyterian plated four
unearned runs in the third inning en route to a 6-3 win. Hill
(1-1) pitched six strong innings while rookie Robert
Cole (Savannah, Ga.) came on in the seventh and final frame to pick
up his first collegiate save. The Blue Hose jumped out to a
5-0 lead through four innings, but TC made it interesting
late. In the sixth inning, the first three Pioneers reached
with singles including Bouman's infield RBI hit. He later
scored on a throwing error and pinch hitter Bobby Darling
(Midlothian, Va.) singled home Guy O'Connell (Perth,
Australia) to move TC within two at 5-3. Chuck Roberts led off with
seventh with a triple to right center, chasing Hill out of the
game. But Cole came on board and got the final three outs of
the game to complete the sweep. Hill surrendered seven hits,
three runs, one earned and struck out two. Sophomore Kenny
Lewis (Scottsville, Va.) was tagged with the loss as he
evens his record at 3-3. The two teams will wrap up
the weekend series Sunday afternoon with a single-game
beginning at 1 p.m. |
