BULLDOGS OUT LAST BLUE HOSE 6-4 AND TAKE WEEKEND SERIES 2-1 CLINTON, S.C. –Wingate University moved into sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference today as they defeated Presbyterian College 6-4 in the rubber game of the weekend series. The Blue
Hose got on the board in the first inning when junior center
fielder Kevin
White (Spartanburg, SC) blooped a ball
in the infield to score senior left fielder Tombo Hite (Abbeville,
SC). The Bulldogs
responded in the fourth inning with three runs and did not
give up the lead the rest of the game.
Junior designated hitter Chad Emery (Fairview,
NC) knocked in the first run and scored the final run of the
fourth inning off of a single by freshman right fielder Seth
Howell (Jefferson, SC). Wingate put
a two more runs on the board, one in the fifth and another in
the sixth, to go up 5-1 on PC, but the Blue Hose rallied in
the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to one run. The inning was led off with a giant homerun over the left
centerfield wall by senior first baseman Matt
Warren (Lexington, SC).
Senior second baseman Davis
Rice (Clinton, SC) capped off the inning
with a two RBI double to cut the Wingate lead to one. The Blue
Hose were unable to cut into the Bulldogs lead in the last
three innings and WU freshman centerfielder Kirk Matthews (East
Bend, NC) added a insurance run in the eighth inning when he
crossed the plate on a fielders choice. Bulldog
senior starting pitcher Marc Church (Granite Falls, NC)
picked up his fourth win of the season after going five and
two-thirds of an inning scattering six hits and striking out
four. For the
Blue Hose, junior starting pitcher Travis
Hill (Rock Hill, SC) took the loss after pitching six
innings and giving five runs off of 10 hits.
Hill struck out a season high nine batters in the loss. The Blue Hose will be back in action this Tuesday as they face off against Erskine College in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 pm at the PC Baseball Complex. The Bulldogs will also play again this Tuesday at home as they take on Belmont Abbey at 2:30 pm. |
