CLINTON, S.C. –Wingate University moved into sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference today as they defeated Presbyterian College 6-4 in the rubber game of the weekend series.

The Blue Hose got on the board in the first inning when junior center fielder Kevin White (Spartanburg, SC) blooped a ball in the infield to score senior left fielder Tombo Hite (Abbeville, SC).  The Bulldogs responded in the fourth inning with three runs and did not give up the lead the rest of the game.  Junior designated hitter Chad Emery (Fairview, NC) knocked in the first run and scored the final run of the fourth inning off of a single by freshman right fielder Seth Howell (Jefferson, SC).

The Blue Hose were unable to cut into the Bulldogs lead in the last three innings and WU freshman centerfielder Kirk Matthews (East Bend, NC) added a insurance run in the eighth inning when he crossed the plate on a fielders choice.

Bulldog senior starting pitcher Marc Church (Granite Falls, NC) picked up his fourth win of the season after going five and two-thirds of an inning scattering six hits and striking out four.  For the Blue Hose, junior starting pitcher Travis Hill (Rock Hill, SC) took the loss after pitching six innings and giving five runs off of 10 hits.  Hill struck out a season high nine batters in the loss.
