PRESBYTERIAN
AND WEST VIRGINIA STATE SPLIT BASEBALL DOUBLEHEADER CLINTON,
S.C. – A
beautiful day at the Presbyterian Baseball Complex made for
some good baseball and some wild plays as the Blue Hose and
Yellow Jackets split a doubleheader.
Presbyterian (13-16) won the first game 4-2 and West
Virginia State College (6-6-1) took the second game 2-1. PC
– 4, W. VA - 2 In
the first half of the doubleheader Blue Hose sophomore
starting pitcher Zachary
Matthews (Batesburg, SC) went the distance pitching
seven innings and giving up only two runs on seven hits while
striking out three and walking none.
Matthews is now 2-0 on the season for PC. PC’s
offense came alive in the fourth inning with the Blue Hose
tallying four runs. Senior
short stop Davis Rice (Clinton,
SC) scored the first when he singled through the left side of
the infield. Junior
center fielder Kevin White (Spartanburg,
SC) doubled to score another run and senior first baseman Matt
Warren
(Lexington, SC) drove in the final two runs in the inning. West
Virginia State picked up its two runs in the fifth, the first
coming off a RBI single by senior designated hitter Jeffry
Cadwallader (Littleton, CO).
In the next at-bat freshman centerfielder Patrick
Griffith (Morgantown, WV) singled down the left field line
to drive in Cadwallader to bring the Yellow Jackets to within
two runs, but with runners on the corners Matthews picked off
the West Virginia State runner at first and ended the rally. Both defenses were superb in the first game with no errors by either team. Yellow Jacket junior starting pitcher Dana Samples (South Charleston, WV) picked up the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season. PC
– 1, W. VA – 2 PC
got their only run in the second inning when sophomore catcher
Jonathan Wyman
(Duluth, GA) singled to center to drive in Warren, but that
was the only run the Blue Hose could muster as West Virginia
State junior starting pitcher Greg Starcher (Grafton,
WV) went six innings scattering four hits and striking out
three batters to pick up his first win of the season.
The
Yellow Jackets picked up their runs in the third and fifth
innings thanks to a couple of hits by junior first baseman Andy
Maught (Jefferson, MD).
In the top of the sixth inning West Virginia State
looked to rally again but a 5-4-3-2-3 double play ended the
inning. The
Blue Hose rallied in the seventh inning, but their efforts
were cut short by Yellow Jacket junior reliever Neal
DeFazio (Bridgeport, WV) who came in and picked up his
second save of the season.
Rice took the loss for PC going seven innings and
allowing two unearned runs off of eight hits while striking
out three. |
