BLUE HOSE AND YELLOW JACKETS SPLIT GAMES IN TODAY’S BASEBALL DOUBLEHEADER 

CLINTON, S.C. — Presbyterian College and West Virginia State College for the second straight day, split games in today’s baseball doubleheader held at the PC Baseball Complex. West Virginia State College won the first game 6-3 while Presbyterian College picked up the win in the second game 4-2. The Yellow Jackets improve to 7-7-1 overall and the Blue Hose improve to 14-17 on the season. 

WEST VIRGINIA STATE 6, PRESBYTERIAN 3

West Virginia State’s junior second baseman Andy Maught (Jefferson, MD) went a perfect four-for-four at the plate with two runs scored and senior first baseman Tim Shilling (St. Albans, WV) went two-for-three with two RBI to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 6-3 win over the Blue Hose in today’s first game.  

The Yellow Jackets opened the game with a three-run first inning highlighted by a RBI-single from Shilling and a two-RBI double from junior catcher Jerry Adkins (St. Albans, WV). West Virginia State pushed the lead to 5-0 in the top of the third inning as Shilling hit a RBI-triple followed by a RBI-single from sophomore right fielder Kevin Goode (Point of Rock, MD). The Blue Hose rallied in the bottom of the sixth as junior outfielder Philip Hauserman (Decatur, Ga.) hit a RBI-single to cut the lead to 5-1. The Yellow Jackets responded with a RBI-double from senior designated hitter Sam Gerkin (Grafton, WV) in the top of the seventh to push the lead back to five runs at 6-1. PC alive in the bottom of the inning as senior first baseman Matt Warren (Lexington, S.C.) hit a RBI-double to cut the lead to 6-3. The Yellow Jackets would force a pop up two batters later to seal the victory. 

Junior Willie McLane (Knoxville, MD) would pick up the win for the Yellow Jackets after throwing five and two-thirds innings allowing one earned run on seven hits to improve to 2-0 in the season. For the Blue Hose, freshman Ryan Ariail (Columbia, S.C.) took the loss to drop to 0-3 on the season after going three innings allowing five earned runs on six hits while striking out four Yellow Jacket batters. PC was led at the plate by Warren who went two-for-four with one RBI.

PRESBYTERIAN 4, WEST VIRGINIA STATE 2

Presbyterian College junior Kevin White (Spartanburg, S.C.) and freshman Bryan Cromer (Columbia, S.C.) combined on the mound to hold the Yellow Jackets to two runs on seven hits as the Blue Hose won 4-2 in the second game. White, who improves to 2-0 on the season, pitched three innings allowing two runs on two hits while striking out five batters. Cromer came in to pick up his first save of the season after pitching five hitless innings of relief work for the Blue Hose. 

Warren got the Blue Hose on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single. West Virginia State took their first lead of the game in the third inning at 2-1 as junior first baseman Josua Robinson (Middlesboro, KY) hit a two-RBI double. In  the bottom of the inning, PC would retake the lead at 3-2 as sophomore catcher Jonathan Wyman (Duluth, Ga.) hit a two-RBI double of his own. The Blue Hose would add an insurance run in the sixth inning on a RBI-single from freshman shortstop Evan Sowell (Chesterfield, S.C.). 

West Virginia State’s starting pitcher Tim Shilling took the loss after throwing six innings and allowing four earned runs on nine hits. At the plate, Robinson led the way going one-for-three with two RBI. The Blue Hose were led at the plate by senior second baseman Davis Rice (Clinton, S.C.) and redshirt junior centerfielder Joseph Bishop (Greenwood, S.C.) who each went two-for-three.
